Hubby is a die hard DIY-er. He fixed our 15 y/o Maytag dryer and it runs like a charm. Now the dishwasher was a whole other story. He ran the diagnostic tests, replaced the part, but due to p*ss poor engineering/design, the fix was not really a fix…more of a bandaid. So, we ended up replacing it. Repair guy is on his way. I can’t deal with waiting til next week for hubby to get back, so if its less than a 200.00 fix ( and it buys us a year or two more w/this fridge) I am going to have it fixed.

Our (maytag?) fridge stopped being cold over the summer and it turned out to be a $40 repair in the end, it’s good as new now. I was braced for a lot worse!

Repair in progress…more than I’d hoped, but it will extend the life of my fridge while not shelling out 2k for a new fridge. College Sr needs to graduate soon so we can start fixing up the house. :-o

Well, when you do look gain, I got all Whirlpool appliances when I redid my kitchen in September. The fridge is French Door and I love it. I don’t have any ice maker or water dispenser, though. I got it on sale at Lowe’s and it was ~$1500. It fits (just) in the space next to a counter. I think it is considered small (21.7cf), but we are only 2. Even when there were 7 of us for more than 2 weeks of holidays, it was big enough. Mine is black, but I think it also comes in white and stainless.

Really happy with our 2 year old French door KitchenAid. I found it helpful when shopping to try all drawers in all fridges, especially the counter depth ones. Some brands were very stiff and the produce drawers did not glide, sometimes requiring you to tip them upwards to open. Sales people shrugged and said to expect them to be that way at home. More of a daily aggravation then I could stand. Frustrating when something that simple doesn’t work.

Ccreader. Re: counter depth. A counter depth fridge fit nicely in our fridge spot. A regular depth fridge would have stuck out at least six additional inches. It had nothing to do with “integrating with the cabinets” but everything to do with NOT sticking out into what is a walk through area.

I’ve been researching this exact topic, as my 12 yr old fridge has been giving us fits. We have a similar problem, and the coils in the freezer frost up and the freezer stops cooling. We have graduated from cleaning out the line with a long wire to melting the frost with a hairdryer. The other day DH tried using a ceramic heater and melted the lighting component on the back of the freezer!! So, time to get back into shopping mode (which began at Thanksgiving).
We too need a counter depth and the one recommended from Sears isn’t made any more. I narrowed it down to a GE Profile and an LG, which, IIRC, had better reviews than the Samsung. I have to be careful with the height, though, so will recheck all the dimensions.

We just redid our kitchen & replaced the refrigerator. We splurged, getting a Kenmore counter-depth french door Grab & Go model … one of the doors has a “trap door” thingy that opens the front of the door without opening all the way into the fridge. We keep jugs of drinking water in our fridge and most of the time when we open the fridge, it is to get water. We had a big family party last month & it was great to just pop the little door for beverages. It was the only thing my H asked for specifically in the whole remodel!

Well the prices have certainly jumped since I looked at the black Friday deals

Jym626…my 350.00 repair was quite a relief after shopping online today. Dodged a bullet…for now.

Well stay tuned, shellz, as it seems we’ll be buying before you!

The great deals have gone away, and the only deal I currently see is on a Samsung that got lousy reviews. I’ll stay focused on the GE and LG. May look at the currently available sears one again, but the one I liked better is gonzo. I think fridges go on sale in February. We can limp along for another month, putting the stuff in the downstairs freezer when we have to defrost this one…

If I hadn’t had company (the kiddos and a gf) and 21 people for Thanksgiving, would probably have bought then.

We need to replace our white 17 year old side-by-side a few years ago. (I was ok with water dispenser not working, but when it switched to always-on we got leery. Also hated the door bins, which had been falling out for years).

We really wanted to like the french door models. The fridge seems great. But our wider side-by-side give way more good freezer space, and we’d miss that. Instead of taking the plunge into stainless steel, we picked black to go with the other black/white appliances. On sale (with more discount for teen scratch in unseen area) it was under $800. Special bonus - it was highly rated on Consumer Reports.

Every couple of years we’re convinced our pricey, old (about 24 years), built in refrigerator has died. Usually it’s because someone has left the door cracked open for too long. We defrost it completely, turn it back on, and what do you know? It works perfectly, once again!

Just got a refrigerator fixed in a rental condo, about $350. Thought we’d just replaced it, then I realized it was a very expensive, French door refrigerator. Much cheaper to fix it than spend almost 2K for replacement!

Shellz, what was the problem? I have that same fridge. It stopped cooling last summer and after some deep googling we removed the back and cleaned the coils. It works fine now.

My cheap tip to everyone is to only purchase appliances and mattresses over a three day holiday weekend. There are always sales. My recently purchased dishwasher was $150 off the regular price around Labor Day. Happy MLK Day everyone!

I was gonna wait til presidents day if I could!

Lowe’s has some good deals on appliances until the 21st and you get rebate Lowe’s gift cards based on how much you spend. I got a washer and dryer for $1200 before tax and got a $120 gift card, which will definitely be used. I always need stuff from there.

I bought my current fridge the same day I bought the washer and dryer which were just retired. It’s a Kitchen Aid side by side. I’m preparing for the worst any time now. 21 years is a long time for any appliance.

Come to think of it, our fridge purchase described in #32 was on Labor Day weekend (2010).

Osprey…the computer was shot. New motherboard, and 4 hrs later it’s cold!! So relieved. Here’s hoping we get a few more years out of the old fridge :-)

I have a Samsung french door fridge and I love the design. The problem is, mine always chimes. It is the same sound the ice maker makes if you manually turn it on or off. But it makes the sound over and over for no reason. Anyone who is handy have any suggestions? But my next one will also be a french door one.

I am guessing that one of the sensor is not working correctly or the door is not touching it. Have a repair person look at it.
