Freshman schedule

Yeah, I requested a switch to the spring semester for my writing seminar because I heard that it is A LOT of commitment and the grading is pretty difficult.

Hey, so did anyone else get their freshman seminar assignment?

I did. FRS 149 Hedge Funds.

Cool! I got FRS 129 Soviet Gulag.

How do you guys know?

@crystal91 an e-mail came in earlier today about FRS placement.

I got FRS 111: Dante’s Inferno and the Latin Classics. I’m super excited.

no email. does that mean confirmed no frosh sem?

I got Soviet Gulag too! Yay Russia!

Oh no! It turns out we can’t take Hum 216/217 along with Math 215 because of a schedule conflict!!!

[Mathematics Department - Princeton University - Undergraduate Homepage](Undergraduate Program | Math)

http://humanities.princeton.edu/hum/hum_application.pdf

Under Math 215, is there only once section from 11-12:20 or two sections on at 11 and one at 12:20?

There’s only one section, C01. It only says 11:00 - 12:20 because it’s scheduled on TTh. All the MWF classes only have one time “listed” because they all end on the :50; all the TTh classes are listed in the same format as 215.

gah i haven’t gotten my frs sem either! but i’m sure they’d send us an email saying if we didn’t get one, so i guess its just taking a little longer.

as for my schedule
eco 100 or eco 101? macro/micro <- i’m going to take both of these at some point but they can be taken in any order, so does anyone have an opinion on which i should take first?
mat 104
fre 101
psy 101 or possibly frs

haha look at all those intro courses… i’m a slacker. but props to everyone taking mat 215, i’ve heard it is INTENSE.

Hey! I’m so excited for classes to start!!

MAT 103 (Maybe 104/201, still need to think about it though)
CHM 201 (Good chance 207, but not for sure)
COS 126
FRS 111!!! I’ll see you there ajbike
PHYS 103

These 5 too much for fall?

@geniusboy1380
I don’t think 5 classes are too much (I’m trying to do the same thing, ahaha!), but I do think that CHM and PHYS at the same time might get a little intense. Also, would you have the schedule space for it? The sciences require labs which take up a lot of room

writing sem and mat 215 are both a lot of work - I certainly wouldn’t recommend taking 5 classes in the fall when you’re taking either of them. Labs take up a lot of time - most classes are 3 hours per week while lab classes are generally 6 or even 7 hours per week. Taking two along with 3 other classes is not a good idea first semester, especially with a math and a cos class, both of which have weekly problem sets / programming assignments.
Try to remember to vary the types of classes you’re taking - you don’t want all classes with lots of readings and papers, or all classes with problem sets, etc.

If both the chem and physics are lab courses (I know physics is, never took that chem) then you will have basically no time to do anything else. It’s definitely possible to fit it all into your schedule, but a three hour lab plus precept plus lectures is a very large commitment in itself, much less doing that twice.

Also, COS will require quite a bit of time for most students, especially right before the projects are due.

@geniusboy1380 Yay! It’ll be a lot of fun…and obviously quite a bit of reading. I’m actually beginning to read Inferno again.

In regards to schedule, I’m thinking:
FRS 111
MAT 103
CHM 201
SPA 103

I’m super excited. Not too much longer before we’re all there.

So due to a schedule conflict, I will not take the HUM sequence.

But these are the courses I am looking at.

Math 215
French 101
Physics 105
Writing Seminar
and maybe Econ 100

There seems to be a lot of distribution requirements, do most people finish these off by the time sophomore year ends?

Question: why are those of you who have AP credit in AP calc taking 103/104? You do realize that by doing so, you are simply taking advantage of the fact you know the material already and screwing up the curve. Incidentally, this happened to me with MAT 201 as nearly half the people in the class are either retaking it (dropped and re-enrolling) or have taken some form of MVC before. It’s kind of annoying.

You bring up an interesting issue: whether to “cash in” your AP credit or take the course which allegedly covers the same material.

IMHO, there is no “right answer” – it is an individual decision based on many unique factors.

First, to get a 5 on an AP does not mean that you got a 90% on the equivalent final in that college course; in fact, it probably means that you got about a 70% (the lower threshold for a 5 in math and science). So, the student who gets a 5 has the knowledge of a “C” student taking that course in college.

Second, I am told by S that the successor courses to the intro courses satisfied by the AP credit have a “presumed knowledge” factor which assumes a real mastery of the intro course material. (For example, in Chem 215, the presumed knowledge factor is physics – which was not covered in HS AP Chem.) A 70% on a HS test does not demonstrate a mastery of a subject.

Third, are the very real issues which arise during the transition into college – socially, intellectually, and in every other way. But particularly the tests! For example, as you who are at P know, a Princeton test is way different from a HS test – even tests covering the same material. Princeton tests seek analysis and not HS-type regurgitation – quite a change and challenge to most students.

So, it becomes an individual decision as to whether a student should forgo the AP credit or not (especially in math and science).
