Freshmen MT Class Sizes, Fall 2012

Otterbein has a very small class but it’s not only 4 people in a show, bisou. They may only have 4 Freshman actors but they have Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, and MT’s, VP’s, and Dance majors, as well. It’s plenty of students for shows.

And yes, sometimes not everyone chosen chooses to attend. Four actors does seem unusually tiny even for them.

Otterbein historically has taken 4 men and 4 women into MT and the same numbers into acting. When you multiply that by 4 years that’s 32 in each program for casting. Don’t know why the change last year. When we did a campus visit they said they were pretty committed to keeping class sizes that small to keep the program at that size. I wonder if less of their acting offers accepted? A pool of 64 students MT and Acting seems like enough to cast most shows.

It all depends on the school. Each school handles things differently. Some will accept only the number they want, and go to a wait list if all of those do not come. Some will accept a larger number to try to yield the number they want.

For example… at James Madison, where I teach, we aim for a freshman MT class of 8 - 12. Our yield rate tends to be that around 55% - 65% of those we admit to the program will choose to attend. The freshman class of 2012 was larger than expected with 73% of those we admitted to the program choosing to attend. We admitted slightly fewer students for freshman class of 2013, and the yield rate was back to approximately 65%… so, we are back to a freshman class within the range we prefer.

Some schools may only want a class of 8 (for a total 32 students in the program)… others may want larger classes. When schools are choosing shows they know the size of their program and, I am sure will choose productions that meet the needs of their students, and can be done with the number of students they have in the program.

A student can only attend one program, and most students apply to many. So, most schools do accept more students than they intend will matriculate.

I just wonder how they run their classes. Don’t BFA kids usually stay together all four years for their classes? Acting 1 would only have 2 kids in it? Or do they combine the MT kids into the acting classes?

Well, some schools do combine them in acting classes. Don’t know specifics about Otterbein.

Yes, the MTs and Acting majors at Otterbein are kind of a single Performance class and they do take their acting and theatre fundamentals classes together as a cohort. Re: the smaller acting class sizes, I’m not 100% sure but my impression (verified by my son, who’s a freshman actor) is that there were some very late responses to offers and/or late withdrawals on the part of kids who took other spots off waitlists; by the time those kids said no, the remaining Otterbein waitlist kids had already committed elsewhere. Despite all the pleading you’ll see on CC in the spring to please let programs know early if you aren’t going to attend, some people wait till the last minute and/or stay on multiple waitlists.

Oh and yes, Flossy is totally right, they aren’t one of the programs where shows are restricted to a single class! Freshmen just auditioned for spring shows. In March, everyone will audition for fall shows. Since the seniors are all gone in the second semester, it adds up to three classes worth of performance majors auditioning for all shows. MT and Acting alike are required to audition for every kind of show (including the winter dance concert). It works out!
