Hello, I am a rising senior in high school and am currently finalizing the list of colleges I plan on applying to. Does anyone happen to have any information on what my chances are of getting an OOS waiver scholarship for Florida State University?
For context I live in North Carolina and attend both a magnet high school and nearby community college. Every class I have taken is honors, dual-enrollment, or AP. My weighted GPA is 4.71. My Act is a 34 Superscored. I will be graduating with an Associates in Science. I have 3000+ hours of community service. I have interned in a forensic drug lab at UNCA and at a compounding pharmacy nearby. Thank you for your help!
What is your unweighted GPA, on a 4 point scale, core courses only?
This seems high. To put some math around it, this means that for the first three years of HS, you did roughly 20 hours per week of community service, all year long. Is that the case?
Hello, my unweighted GPA is 3.9 and as for the volunteer service hours I typically only spend about 15 hours a week with my organization, however, they have week or weekend long events in the summer and winter where we stay overnight and typically work about 16 hour days.
I apologize I didn’t see your first question originally, I was under the impression that there was only one type of Out-of-State Tuition Fee Waiver. What other kinds are there?
I don’t know how many types there are, you would have to look at the website. The OOS tuition waivers that I’m familiar with are the grandparent waiver and a fine arts major waiver.
The FSU website states that the waiver is for those who have attended at least 3 years of high school in the state of Florida. Nevertheless, I do recall another waiver, but that may have been linked to starting on a FSU study abroad programs for one’s first semester or first year.
There are at least two options for you detailed here:
You should be quite competitive.
Interested in forensic chemistry ? If yes, check out the University of Mississippi. All such majors received full tuition scholarships, but that may have changed in the past couple of years.
Here’s the one he is talking about from FSU website
Out-of-State tuition reduction waivers are awarded to a limited number of admitted non-Florida first-year students. Applicants are considered for funding based on their academic merit or recognition of talent in one of FSU’s Fine Arts Programs.
Merit
Admitted first-year students are automatically considered for this scholarship based on academic performance in the classroom and test scores. A separate application is not required. The scholarship is a 100 percent reduction (waiver) of the out-of-state portion of the tuition cost, valued at approximately $481 per semester hour ($14,444 based on 30 semester hours for the academic year, a total value of $57,776 distributed across four years). Please note that this award is prorated based on your actual enrollment each term.
The Out-of-State Tuition Waiver is automatically renewed each semester if the following criteria are met:
Enrollment in 15 credit hours each semester
Maintenance of a cumulative FSU grade point average of 3.0 or better
Consistent, successful degree progress and course completion
The waiver amount is only applied toward tuition and does not include other fees, nor does it apply toward study-abroad programs.
Weighted GPA is very impressive
However, make sure it is weighted the same way FSU weighs a GPA
Calculation of High School Academic GPA
Only the academic core subjects will be used in the calculation of the grade point average for admission purposes. We do not use the GPAs listed on the high school transcript or report card. Grades of “C” or better in academic core dual enrollment courses, AICE, AP, and IB coursework will be weighted and receive one point in the GPA recalculation; grade of “C” or better in honors, pre-AICE, pre-AP, and pre-IB coursework will receive one half point.
Foreign Language counts as a core subject
Finally this is the average number of core classes based on middle 50% of admits Fall 2024
