Full-freighter entitlement?

There are those chancees who take the human chancers on CC with a grain of salt, but I have seen chancees who took us (even me) as the next best thing barring a chance from actual adcoms.

ah, Catria, I admire a poster who can admit to a silly premise and move on. Truly.

All that can confidently be done on any chance thread by any really responsible adult is to urge every poster to make sure they have their safeties in order and apped up as a matter of course.

At DD1’s school all scholarship kids are under the auspices of the Scholarship Office which is, putting it mildly, paranoid about kids keeping their scholarships. As a result those kids are sheep-herded into study groups, free tutoring, and for freshmen (sigh) supervised study where one clocks in/out a certain amount of hours a week under the watchful eye of a TA or even Prof (can you say college level study-hall?).

I do not know if this creates opportunities for better grades among the scholarship kids vs the full freight kids but from DD1’s experience she took full advantage of the offers and maintains a stellar GPA so far. I also do not know how many of these perks are available to full-freighters, I believe nearly all but the study hall are, but how many take advantage voluntarily is another story. But in either case we’re talking opportunities for better grades, not simply getting the better grades because of financial status.

I could see it happening regardless of financial status at the school level but not at the individual student level.

I think there are some oligarch families that feel a sense of entitlement at college. But I imagine it has less to do w them paying full-freight for tuition, and more to do w them donating a new dorm building.

Well that must be an ego boost for ya.

If you are astute enough to know that your chancing means nothing, why do it?

What about green box entitlement?

The fact that no one ever talks about it shows you how deep the problem goes.

People will probably now try and tell you green box entitlement doesnt exist- what sparse problem are they desperate to cover up?

Oh silly. There are threads about exchanging dots and there are threads that will attack whatever strikes someone’s fancy. Just the nature of the beast. No guage of reality ensured.

I’ll admit I’m baffled why kids chance each other- without knowing much.

^^I find chances threads disturbing at times.

I think chance threads should be banned from CC

I think that people should be able to exercise freedom of speech and talk about whatever they want to talk about.

Cons, I guess the question is: anywhere, any time? Or should there be some discretion? Ie, should I go ahead and say, some college kids have too much time on their hands?

I’m amused that a phenomenon with as much reality as Manti T’eo’s girlfriend has generated 4 pages of comments. What other non-existent things can we talk about? I’d could use some advice on the unicorns eating my tulip bulbs.

There is entitlement if you come from a very wealthy, well known family likely (at least in the eyes of the school) to donate a lot of money. That happens quite often, especially in private schools used to catering to the wealthy, and dependent on that money.

MommaJ get’s a thumbs up…or would you prefer a greenie boost LOL?

“Full-freighter entitlement?”

How should a “full-ride” feel, either need-based or merit-based?

You wanna know how non-existent this phenomenon is? Lennay Kekua was full-freight at Stanford, and even SHE never felt entitled to any special treatment.

I never felt any such thing in college, but my brother did, going to a like school. So YMMV on this. I’m sure it exists, but the degree can vary not only by school, but IMO by person and who that person is around. I’ve heard genearlities of every kind about any number of schools from kids going to the same school, many of them conflicting. My son’s view of his school is a whole other one from his cousin’s and his childhood friend’s.

Given that half the kids at most schools get financial aid of some kind, it’s not as though anyone who is getting this is in a minority position. Also there is a huge range among full freight paying families. Some are so wealthy that they simply don’t feel the check at all. Those are a minority. There may be some who come from financially strapped homes, but grandmom is paying or split up families where NCP is paying while kid lived with a parent who is strapped. Or a family is really pounding salt to afford that full freight. There isn’t necessary that chasm between those who are on financial and those who are not.

You mean I could have gone into my kids’ colleges and instisted that their grades be raised? Why didn’t anyone tell me? I’ve been robbed!

I’ve heard of this at local private high schools, but at a college? Never.
