Funny conversation with sweet but self-centered teen

My H and I believe it is part of our parental job description to role model enjoying the empty nest years. It’s tough work, but someone has to do it. :)

LOL how cute. TFS

*DD (in sad, concerned tone): Mom, I’ve been thinking that we should get a dog because I don’t know what you are going to do next year without me here.

ME: Nah, I’d like a dog, but I don’t want to have to worry about getting home to the dog.

DD (in horrified, accusatory tone): You’re not going to be HOME? WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO BE?*

Ha! Well, of course with her being gone, you really have no need to be anywhere but home.

of course, you can turn it around and wonder why she isn’t in her dorm every minute that she’s not in class. ;)

Travelnut, I am going to adopt your mantra.

D had been told that her father and I would pay the full cost of her and her brother attending college. One day in high school she asked, “If I get a scholarship can you give me that same amount of money to spend, since you were going to pay all my college costs anyway?” To which we said, “NO!” I will say now that she’s almost 21 and wants to go to grad school, she has become considerably more thoughtful about money.

This kind of reminds me of D in about October of her first year of preschool. One day at drop off she turned to me and said, “okay Mommy, you can go home today and then come back and get me.”

She had thought I sat in the preschool parking lot for 3 hours every day :)

I thought I was the only teenager who did this with my mom.

I make sure to spend as much time as I could sitting with my D. when she visits. That is the time when she is not out with her HS friends. She is in her 2nd year of Grad. School and when she is at home, she study practically all the time. But she loves me to be there doing my things. Too precious! She says, it is always very productive for her. Frankly, for me too and very memorable. She knows that we are busy and rarely at home while she is away.
