Funny gym class stories/or vent on PE here

UMDAD_
I got one to match your concussion story. My younger s was horsing around with friends in middle school before gym class. Some kids were playing the chokehold game, only they held hum too long and he passed out. When hs eyes rolled back into his head the othe kid got spooked and let go-- sending my s face first into the hardwood gym floor. The school nurse didn’t think his nose was broken. She was wrong.

As much as I think my own PE stories are harrowing, it’s amazing to listen to the high school football stories of the guys my age…boys who missed a pass in the game were roughed up by the other players at the direction of the coach at the next practice…then sent to the nurse with some lie about what happened, or grudingly sent to the ER if the bleeding wouldn’t stop. These stories are all told laughingly by Texas good old boys, but wow! just wow!

atomom – we had the navy blue version of your gym suit in junior high. Horrible. Could never do a chin-up or climb a rope. We ran laps. Endlessly. I also faked showers. I hated, hated, hated the body comparisons.

The nine weeks we did first aid training were my favorite part. We also had biannual flouride treatments in PE class. Had to brush with nasty tasting stuff and then chew the red tablets to see if we missed any spots.

S1’s PE class was freshman year and was at the end of the day (only the kids in his program had an extended day). This had the effect of making it “nerd PE.” He used to do his laps while reading a book. When the PE teacher mentioned this to the audience at back-to-school night, S and I had a little chat. The teacher’s feeling was that she wanted the kids to get some exercise and find things they’d like to do as lifetime activities. So, when she gave him permission to play Ultimate every day during class, he was sold.

Middle school S got hit in the mouth with a tennis racket in his gym class last year. He had braces, so it was like my volleyball experience–except the teacher wouldn’t let him go to the nurse. He made him stand up, bleeding, in front of the class as “an example of what happens to kids who don’t follow instructions!” I thought this was totally inappropriate of the teacher, but I didn’t report it because, if I did, I was pretty sure that teacher would be picking on my scrawny kid the rest of the year.
