Futons are obviously allowed in this dorm, but for other readers be aware that fire laws in some towns mean that they don’t want untreated furniture in the rooms. My son had to hide his comfortable desk chair in the closet whenever there were fire inspections. If 10x15 is a single there’s plenty of room. If it’s a double it’s going to be very tight and will really depend on what size the furniture is and where the door is located and if a closet (or two) is or isn’t included. I tried laying it out and there are only a couple of configurations that are even possible if the other student doesn’t want to loft their bed and stick their desk under it.
Futons under lofted beds in double rooms was very common at my kids’ schools. The fact that the school offers a service where the futon will be installed before move-in, leads me to believe it is pretty common at this school.
Less is more, people! My daughter and roommate both lofted their beds. Under DD’s, they had the fridge and , I think, microwave, some suitcases she stored stuff in, her hockey bag, and whatever clothes she took off and threw there. Under roommate’s bed she had a dresser and stored other stuff. There was not enough room for a chair, never mind a futon. The futon would have just been for tossing stuff on, not sitting on.
Less is more.
Here is the deal…if the family can move and assemble the futon with no help, fine. Otherwise, I’d take it back and buy two of those round folding cushioned chairs. They are very light, and don’t require assembly, on sale now at BBB.
If she wants a futon and you can afford it then let her get one. What the girls do with it during the next 9 months is for them to worry about.
^^
I don’t think the issue is what they’ll do with it over 9 months. The issue is getting up the stairs and into the dorm.
If the futon hasn’t yet been purchased or can be exchanged for a different one, then find one that has legs or some other part that comes off easily to make it easier to get around corners and upstairs.
I would say that it is good to have. She is probably more likely to sit there and study than at a desk, for comfort Climbing up and down into the loft bed to hang out isn’t very easy. And if she has a friend stay over there is someplace for them to crash.
Don’t forget, what comes up, must come down, and then repeat 3 more years.
