G20 Schools

Any further insights on Eton College?

I speak from an English independent school perspective. Eton and Sevenoaks are both great schools but there are a number of private independent schools in England that do academically better and provide an over all fantastic experience for those that attend. Rather surprised not to see the likes of Wycombe Abbey, Westminster, St Paul’s Girls/Boys and Kings College School on the list. All those I mention consistently outperform those on the G20 list and get more into Oxbridge than any of those on the G20 list. Westminster and St Paul’s boys and Girls schools average 50% (this was widely reported by the BBC) of students being accepted at Oxbridge with Wycombe Abbey and Kings not much further behind. Apart from Eton the other schools on G20 don’t come close to that result. Downside is that majority of students (apart from Wycombe which is fully boarding) are day students at these schools.

The UK amazingly has ‘league tables’ that each year provide the results on how schools and their students perform. These are ready available online. Furthermore, the likes of The Guardian, independent and FT newspapers all publish tables too.

This year Wycombe Abbey (based on the information provided in The Guardian) ranked no 2 in the UK and Kings no3. No1 was a grammar school in the state sector. Kings - which provides the option of both A levels and IB (I believe) also ranked no1 IB School in the world based on student performance in 2014.

Main entry point for these schools is Yr7 -age 11 (albeit Westminster, St Paul’s Boys and Kings College School also have junior schools from Yr3-age 7) and Yr9-age 13. And finally for sixth form at age 16. Having said that each year spaces become available as ‘occasional places’ when students either relocate or are moved on (a polite way of saying that they didn’t cut the mustard).

I wrote the above very late at night on my phone so forgive any inadvertent mistakes.
