Gallbladder removal?

For the future let your docs know you get nausea from anesthesia. For me, it’s worse than pain. After I told the docs, they gave me IV anti-nausea med thereafter when I needed sedation. It worked great–no nausea AND no pain!

They gave me anti nausea meds from the first dilaudid shot until about ten hours after surgery. They worked well until I tried to eat. After my nausea problem, uh… solved itself, in the hospital I didn’t get nauseous again until about two days later.

I’ll be sure to ask for follow up anti nausea meds after discharge next time (which hopefully won’t be necessary for a good, long time… I am sick of ERs lol).

On a bright note (because you have to look at the positives, right?) I’ve lost at least five pounds in the last week. I’ve kicked my butt this summer trying to get into shape and was doing well but this worked better than riding the exercise bike for nearly an hour every day. (I’d rather have ridden the bike than go through this but gotta be positive :D).

Yeah, it’s a nice side effect of surgery or not feeling well in general!

“They gave me anti nausea meds from the first Dilaudid.”

^Even the anti nausea meds didn’t help me with Dilaudid. Dilaudid (which they were shooting patients up with like it was water) knocked me for a loop. Seconds after they injected it into my IV, I felt like I was on a bad trip. The wall in front of me started to wave from from the ceiling to the floor. Within 30 minutes, it made me throw up. After giving it to me 3 times (they even cut the dose by half one time), I told them to stop. They gave me a shot of demerol (not as powerful) to try and that worked great—no nausea or bad tripping effect.

In the future, you’ll know to tell them to give you something other than Dilaudid.

Be careful about celebrating weight loss due to starvation and rest, since such weight loss is often due to muscle loss rather than fat loss.

Sigh. There’s nothing I can do about it either way.

I know what quick fat loss can mean. I’m choosing to ignore it because I can’t do anything about it and choosing to make it a positive.

Well I think part of the weight loss was because they removed your Gall Bladder. I mean that had to weigh something right? I wouldn’t worry about muscle loss over this short of time period.

[How much does your gallbladder weigh in pounds? - Yahoo! Answers](<a href=“Yahoo | Mail, Weather, Search, Politics, News, Finance, Sports & Videos”>http://■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/question/index?qid=20100727102929AAXb1HU)

I love the internet!!

(In case you don’t want to bother to click, the answer is that the gallbladder weighs less than 1/4 pound.)

Wonder if an enlarged gallbladder with gallstones weighs more.

hey, I’m always happy for a significant weight loss, whether it’s because I’ve been sick for a couple of days or not. Not that I’d think it while I’m sick, but when I’m feeling better and a little thinner…I’ll take it any way it comes.

I had the same thing, had attacks of pain, went to the ER, they said it was gastritis, the flare up went down…until one weekend it hit, I went to work, couldn’t take it, was throwing up, went home, wife forced me to go to the er…and gallbladder it was. They did it laparascopically under deep sedation, went home the next day.

The only after affects are I have to be careful with fried foods (not that I eat much of them), eating a fried dinner can cause real issues with indigestion and such…but other than that, I really don’t notice it was removed, I am now about 6 years post.

It’s been a week now and I’m still in quite a bit of pain where the pain is. I’m furious that my drain is still in. It’s not doing anything other than causing me pain. The doctor won’t return my calls because he’s only in on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I called the ER and they told me that I had to wait until I saw the doctor to get it out. My follow-up is on Thursday.

Yesterday I was nauseous all day and couldn’t eat until dinner.

I really don’t think my recovery should be taking this long =/. Oh well, only two more days until I get this stupid thing out.

Have you called and left a specific message at his office with his nurse? “I am having pain xyz, nausea and I still have in this drain…I have an appt on Thursday but this seems abnormal…ask her to return your call.”

/mom

Yeah I left one. I actually just got a call back after posting this. They said that unless the pain gets too bad, they’ll see me on Thursday. They said if the pain is severe to go to the ER again.

I think I’m just crabby because a lot of this experience has left a lot to be desired. From the very first day, no one seemed to know what was going on. I kept getting conflicting answers about whether or not I would get surgery that night or the next morning (didn’t know the answer until they were wheeling me down to the pre-op place). They never gave me my bloodwork results like I asked and instead gave me a paper to call to get them- and the number was disconnected! They didn’t really give me a lot of information when I was exiting and instead told me to follow-up with the surgeon’s office (which I did and THEY were unhelpful). It’s just been an extremely frustrating process.

You are completely entitled to let loose on the doc when you see him. At the least, he has to give you a copy of your blood test results. Don’t leave his office until you get them.

Does the pain seem similar to when you were having an attack? Years ago I had my gallbladder taken out. I eded up in the hospital for 4 days. My gallbladder was inflamed and I had a terrible reaction to the anesthesia and pain meds. The recovery was slow and I Sometimes felt like I still had stones. I went back to the Dr and I ended up having a remaining stone in my duct.
I alo don’t take any prescription pain meds. They make me sick. Not worth it.
Hope you are feeling better.

Thanks VH and mom60.

No, the pain is currently ONLY at the site where the drain is (a skin pain, not an internal pain, because the drain is constantly tugging on my skin). I have four areas on my stomach that are patched up including the drain site and none of the other three hurt (a bit tender when you touch them but nothing more than a bruise-life feeling). I’ve been icing it, and that helps, but the pain is bad in the morning when I’ve been sleeping with the stupid thing flopping around. I’ve tried different things to decrease the pressure but it only works when I’m awake.

Try an ace bandage all around your belly to hold the damn thing in place.

If it is quite uncomfortable and painful tonight, go to the ER, do not call. They will call the surgeon. He may tell them to remove the drain. Sorry you are so uncomfortable.
