I am assuming that you continue to live where you are living now for the next ten years.
It’s a game. You can pretend that wherever you land has EXACTLY the same stores you have now. ![]()
Groceries- Whole Foods.
Shoes - Nordstrom
Athletic wear - Lululemon
Furniture- Crate & Barrel
Everyday clothing - Nordstrom
Groceries - Safeway
Shoes- DSW
Athletic Wear-ARC thrift shop**
Furniture- maybe Lazy Boy? It’s been 15 years….
Daily clothing-Kohls
** Most of my athletic clothing is from ARC… no qualms about giving it away if it’s a flop. If I had to pick a retail store not sure if it would be REI, Kohls or Lands End (oops - not allowed, no stores near me).
Groceries - Trader Joe’s
Shoes - REI
Athletic Wear - REI
Furniture - Crate and Barrel
Daily clothing - my local women’s consignment store (high end and well-curated so I never need to go to Nordstrom because someone else has already)
I’m mixing this up with stores I’d love to shop if money wasn’t an issue
Grocery- Gelson’s
Shoes- Allbirds
Athletic wear-this is hard one but I’ll go with Lululemon
Furniture-Serena and Lily
Everyday wear- I’m usually in leggings but I love Anthropologie

Furniture - ?? - Don’t have a favorite
Daily clothing, not shoes - Nordstrom
*I’m surprised how many said Costco - For the purposes of this game, a place like Costco would not work for us if we are only allowed to shop at one grocery store. As mostly empty nesters, I need smaller amounts for things like fresh produce, cheese, dairy. Plus they don’t have many grocery items we typically buy.
I rarely shop at Whole Foods and was going to put Trader Joes. But if I can only shop at one store, Trader Joe’s would not have the selection of everything I normally buy so WF it is, assuming I could afford it ![]()
Rack is a good one for shoes!
I was not sure if we as empty nesters would rely on Costco as much as we used to. Surprise! We continue to almost exclusively shop there. Freeze the excess meat, work through the veggies by being creative, eat more berries… plus we save time in addition to $$ by shopping there. It also helps that there are 2 of them close to where we live. The caveat is that I’m not a gourmet chef. Tonight I made corned beef with cabbage and carrots and onions… all ingredients were from Costco. ![]()
