He can teach, tutor, and even teach home school classes (depending on where he is). I pay for my children who home school to take science and history and that breaks down to $20/hr per child. But there are 10 kids in the each class. So the teacher somewhat gets $200/hour. Public schools in Texas hire with no certification and private schools do too. I, personally, would not like teaching at a school. He could look for an internship?

Mini…that is a gorgeous place!!

NSA apps for next summer and internships is either Oct or Nov 15th, I can’t remember. American Math. Society has suggestions for jobs on their site. Would it be possible for him to stay on and do research with a prof at his current school for a year?

Thanks for the various suggestions.

This is still a theoretical possibility only so he has not really looked into anything.

He already has research and publications, does not like traveling (likes his routine and predictability :)). He probably can stay and work for a prof if he goes this route, but I was looking to see what else might be out there.

He’s a big boy now what does he want to do? I’d vote for letting him find a job and take that year off before he starts his PhD. Unfortunately earning money is part of life. What is he planning on doing with the PhD…perhaps he can find something in a related field? If he’s planning on teaching and doing research with the PhD, then I agree with the teaching/research related suggestions. If he’s planning on staying in teaching/research then publication is just part of the job and it won’t end with the BS/MA.

Has he applied to any Fellowship programs, i.e Carnegie, Fulbright, Heinz, Churchill, etc?
If not he should do so immediately, as they can be the perfect “Gap Year” solution for tip top students who do intend to go on and earn a PhD.
Some are highly competitive, but for some students, its worth applying .
