General airline travel thread

Dear Universe,
I definitely want to be safe, but please don’t let our 15 hour flight next week be one of the ones that has issues and cancel our flight.

Yes the FAA recommended a visual inspection of the 737-900er planes 4 days ago. That is the plane we most often fly on our cross country flights (and we have several scheduled in the not too distant future). Our April itinerary has shown a change in aircraft, but so far no aircraft change on our flight in a month.

Aren’t those long-haul flights more likely to be 777 or 787 models (or some form of Airbus)?

Not sure what airline you are flying but there are several ways to look up the aircraft for that itinerary.

Yes. The itinerary should list the aircraft type.
Sometimes it might just be a short code (like B787 or A340).

Alaska is restoring its schedule… too late for us.

Yeah, I will figure it out.
It seems like flights get changed and canceled so much I haven’t paid a lot of attention.

ETA - looks like Boeing 737 and 787. Are there multiple kinds of 737, or are we in trouble? (It’s an American flight and it just says 737)

Not sure about your question, but the 787 should be the long-haul flight and the 737 will be the local connecting flight.

Get a window seat on the 787 to play with the electrochromatic windows - you push a button to make them darker or lighter, it’s very cool.

Doesn’t look like the carrier even owns 737-900s. They have 737-800s. Alls good!!

Note that the 737-900 is different from the more common 737-900ER.

Yes I know. I was helping the poster backchannel whose flight will be on a 737-800. I was telling her which airlines use the 737-900er and probably posted the wrong article. Regardless,she is fine with her flights and I am hoping Delta does a good job of checking it’s 737-900ers before our flights!!!

Yes, I was on a window seat on JAL with the fancy windows. H kept reaching over to toggle the button. He found it a lot of fun.

Planes − Travel information − American Airlines says that American Airlines has 737-800 and 737 MAX (does not say which MAX model, but other sources indicate MAX 8). So no 737-900ER or 737 MAX 9 that may have door plugs (false doors).

However, if it is a code share flight, you need to look up the operating airline’s fleet. Alaska Airlines is one of American Airlines’ code share partners.

She KNOWS this. All addressed earlier today.

Alaska is moving quickly with their MAX 9 inspections. Just flew on one…. The fake door thingy stayed put. Phew. :wink:

None of those bolts will ever be loose again. They will be double and triple checked every day.

But some folks must have bailed out… there were many more empty seats on this plane which originally was supposed to be a 900.

I have been chasing the elusive fare drops to snare another set of tix for DH and I to go watch older s’s kids so they can go away Memorial Day weekend. We are pretty loyal to Delta b/c (1) I have status (and can buy coach and then upgrade to comfort plus and no baggage fees if we have to check a bag), (2) I now need to work, with all their new rule changes, to keep the status, (3) they are pretty reliable, (4) we are in a hub so lots of flights, (5) our airport is one where Delta has the Digital ID and it is SUPER easy and fast to get any bags checked if needed and TSA is super fast, and (6) at this stage of my life, unless it is impossible, we want to only fly direct.

BUT, their fares are just crazy. Not only are they high, but they jump around like crazy. By a LOT. Because Delta no longer has change fees (if you change you pay only any fare difference) I have tried to grab tix when the fare looks reasonable (I won’t say inexpensive b/c they never are) and if the fare drops later, I call and get an e-credit.

So I now buy tickets way early (also so I can get the upgrade seats I want), but this also means we are subject to itinerary and/or equipment changes that changes the flight/times, our seats, etc. We have flights book into September.

The flights we were eyeing for the Memorial Day weekend did drop a bit last night to a close enough price to the later night flight that we didn’t want to take heading out to CA, so I grabbed them. This morning (I forgot that Delta does its itinerary changes on Saturdays) they changed our return flight home (actually to a better time, allowing us to get home an hour earlier) and the flights are now $700 more ($350 each) than I paid last night! They did screw up our seats for the return flight b/c there were already others booked on that flight, but we are still in Comfort plus so its ok.

I have 4 other round trip flights booked, and the ones in April jumped up by $1000 ($500 each) from when I booked them 6 weeks ago.
Its NUTS!

Just booked a flight to see my mom in North Carolina in March. Always fly American because it’s the only direct from here. H figured out through Google Flights that it’s a good bit cheaper to purchase through Alaska Airlines (code shares). I got a great deal! Also read somewhere six weeks out is a sweet spot to book.

Stupid early flight from the west coast, but I’m going to have to adjust to east coast time anyway.
