General airline travel thread

This isn’t directly related to airline travel, but…
Does anyone happen to have a really good discount code that works for rental cars? We need a van in Grand Cayman and they are pretty pricey. A couple of years ago a CCer involved with golfing posted a code anyone could use that was pretty good.

ETA looks like @jpga13 was the person who provided rental code previously, but I can’t tell if he is still active on CC.

It’s with National. You need to have an Emerald Club account. Then when logged in and after entering location and dates, add in the Account Number field in the Account Number/Coupon drop down: XZ41PGA. (You may have to override “Emerald Club member” in that field.)

There are lots of codes easily findable on the web. I have a bunch written down (I use Hertz) but they are at home and I am not :frowning:

Code is still good

I got these headphones for my daughter - she loved them and a month ago I got a pair for myself.

I’m not a big fan of over ear. My favorites are these. Bose QC20 acoustic noise cancelling. Bose doesn’t make them anymore but they can be found on eBay and Mercari.

Lightweight and excellent noise canceling.

I have these as well which are a close second.

That IS the right Sony headphone link I sent. I apparently had the manual in my travel folder with me. They work as wireless and wired to the plane screen.

Please move on from discussing headphones or start a new thread. Thank you.

A few weeks ago, I was traveling from DFW to SMF on a 10:43 pm flight

American Airlines flight was delayed (of course). Around midnight, we board and sit there for an hour. After an hour, captain announces he timed out and they would find another pilot. After another delay, everyone gets off the plane.

They reschedule the flight for 4am. Convince everyone not to take a hotel voucher because there wouldnt be enough time to get sleep and come back so most people sleep at DFW

Of course 4am did not happen and it goes to 6, 7 and finally 8:43am. 10 hr delay.

So I write to AA and let them know this was unacceptable. For my inconvenience, they issue me a $25 trip credit. Wow. Amazing. I send them another email questioning how $25 to anyone on this flight was acceptable. Then they issue me a follow up email for $150 but defending their original position that $25 was “fair”.

It’s crazy that an airline could think that $25 for a non weather related 10 hour delay is “fair” because they cant find pilots to fly. What was worse was the overly optimistic 4am flight reschedule which is why most people stayed at the airport. There were literally kids sleeping on the floor at DFW.

I sent a complain to the FAA. I’m not sure if this is how other airlines deal with this type of issue but them defending their actions is complete nonsense.

Ill finish out the year with them but thinking of switching to Delta next year. Ive flown AA since 2005.

Moss stressful airports in the US, ranked (because we love rankings here  ):

My sister swore off United after she was delayed overnight by them over a decade ago and was not offered much at all in compensation—no hotel, not much credit in voucher or points. I don’t know if her delay was due to weather or other causes.

I am still mostly on United for my travel. It works pretty well for us.

Interesting to see these.

I see that LaGuardia is not on the list though the other two NYC ones are - JFK and Newark. I have flown in/out of LaGuardia twice in the last two years and had really pretty great experiences both times.

Also putting in a positive plug for Detroit (DTW) - big improvements it seems over the last several years and I’ve not heard or experienced much in the ways of issues.

Gov is testing passport renewals online. A limited number can do so now.

https://www.wsj.com/lifestyle/travel/passport-renewal-online-appointments-54ba329c?st=pdhekwzltxfi2tk&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

Travelers who want to renew their passports online can do so starting Wednesday.

Eligible travelers can process their applications without sending everything in the mail and can expect to receive their passport back in six to eight weeks. The State Department tested online passport renewals in 2022, but took the program offline in 2023.

The relaunched renewal program is open to the public, but is in beta, or trial mode, senior State Department officials said. This will allow the department to make changes to the process as it evaluates the process and user feedback.

Under the program, a limited number of people can renew their passports. Each day around 1 p.m. Eastern time, the department will open up a small number of spots for renewal, the officials said.

I’m not sure what your post is in response to, but we try to avoid United also. They canceled a connecting flight we had AS we were heading to the airport, and it took me quite a long time to get the compensation we were owed by them. Another time they just canceled our non-stop flight and put us on a pretty bad alternative (with no notice to me), and by the time I figured it out there were no good cheap options left.
I will fly them, but not as first choice.

I’m surprised none of the DC area airports are on the list. Thanks for sharing.

United bumped my husband and son one time even though they had confirmed flights. They weren’t able to get assigned seats ahead of time. They lost a day of a short ski trip. For their return flight, I got on the phone and told the person I wouldn’t hang up until she had given them seats. Then one other time, our entire family got bumped. I try to avoid United whenever possible.

Involuntary denied boarding seems to be more common among passengers who do not have pre-assigned seats on airlines which have pre-assigned seats.
