General Engineering

Yes, that’s one quote i used but you can google just engineering - and the same stat appears - and analysis, relative to engineers alone.

https://www.bls.gov/ooh/field-of-degree/engineering/engineering-field-of-degree.htm does list the following for engineering (not STEM) graduates:

  • 30% in architecture and engineering
  • 19% in management
  • 15% in computer and mathematical
  • 7% in business and financial operations
  • 5% in sales
  • 24% other

I.e. 45% technical. However, it is likely that a greater portion of new graduates started work in engineering but became managers etc. later. Meaning just because an engineering graduate does not currently work in engineering does not mean that they never worked in engineering (and they might currently be managing in an engineering organization or doing technical sales or something still related to their degree).

Just showing what articles say -

I didn’t listen to this but here’s it’s title - Why 75% of Engineers Will NEVER Work as Engineers | Deep Dive into Numbers.

Note the word never is all caps.

I linked below. There are many articles saying similar…so I haven’t dug in.

Simply showing what’s out there - when in this case, the parent wondered if engineering worth it with a general degree.

Forget the #s - the theme to OP is - it’s ok if they don’t become an engineer - opportunities aren’t dried up because of it.

Edit: just looked at the video. It is about the labour market in Canada with respect to engineering graduates there. So not necessarily the same as the US.
