General retirement travel plans

We live in New Orleans and have lots of family visitors, especially now that we are empty nesters and typically have 4 bedrooms available for guests. Our kids come home a lot with multiple friends, especially during Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest. In about five years, we will likely sell the house and downsize to a downtown condo with 2-3 bedrooms; and get a small house in a cooler climate for the hot summers and hurricane season. Kids are already protesting the idea.
We don’t get as many friends who stay with us. Most friends visiting from out of town get their own hotel room, which I can understand. I usually do the same when visiting their hometowns, lol.

We are doing a safari in a few weeks. Next goal (2025) is Australia/New Zealand. Will do a search on this thread for tips. Any more are welcome!

Wow you are really on the move! I’m just starting my travel adventures but I couldn’t go non-stop like you. This is awesome and I love following your trip updates!

Thanks! It has been a very busy travel year this year. And I want to get these other ones booked before we are too old and not able to enjoy them!!

When I think about where to travel in the near future I think about mobility. For now and I hope for awhile to be able to travel with ease but it’s not a given.
I’ve always been a plan my own journey, I’m a good researcher and a decent navigator. My husband drives but he’s not a planner. I’m finding that I would consider a guided trip in the future something I’ve never contemplated before. I’m getting tired of planning but I still want to go.
Next year I’m 65 and I think I’ll try to do a mixed trip, half organized and half on our own.

We’ve done that a few times in Europe. Most recently it was a Viking Rhine River cruise (easy peasy for 7 days) with self-planned stay in Amsterdam before…. then train / self-planned Florence visit.

When we went to New Zealand, we did half as a guided trip and the other half on our own (meaning just me and my husband - we used a New Zealand based travel guy to help us plan that part).

How long ago was that? How did you find a good travel agent in New Zealand?

If you fly back from New Zealand or Australia on Air Tahiti, you can make a stopover for a few days in Tahiti and there is no additional airfare mark up. Our relatives have done this…and stayed in one of those nice resorts with the cabanas over the water…and said it was well worth it!

I wonder if they are codeshare partners with delta?

I doubt that they are code share with Delta…but you could check. Regardless…they are the least costly way to fly back here.

We are chasing delta miles. But could fly delta over and air Tahiti back. Thanks!

We continue to travel only to visit MIL, which involves sitting in her room for several days. I’m getting frustrated with H, because as time goes on, we’re not going to be able to go on the active trips we typically enjoy. Her LTC doesn’t run out until she’s 102, and I’m convinced that she will hang on another 5 years until she’s gotten her money’s worth. I’m hoping that someday in the not too distant future, we’ll travel for fun. I’m not ready yet to go without him - we used to talking about traveling, and I’m hoping he’ll decide it’s time soon.

We went for 4 weeks Feb/Mar 2024. Will send you info.

Thank you!!!

Was in Tahiti (Papeete and Moorea) in 1985 - wonderful trip. I wonder if they could be partnered with Air France?

It doesn’t look like Air France code shares with this airline.

Ah, yes, I guess I could have checked! Thank you!

Interesting- they partner with Korean AIr and Latam, as does Delta, but they don’t partner with delta directly :frowning:

General retirement travel plans:

With 4 dogs and a strong desire to adopt more, my plans for retirement travel are limited to from my desk, to the kitchen, to the front, back, and/or side yards.

But, for real adventure, I frequently travel 3 miles to the vets’ office.
