I hear ya—we will be in Canada twice in 2025, not sure how we’ll be treated.
Hawaii is a warm weather, very blue state.
Phoenix/Scottsdale area is very nice in the spring!
I plan on traveling to Canada as much as we can. I suspect there will be many people traveling to Canada to support their economy. The exchange rate is still fantastic.
I am going there in March !
We have plans to go to Maui in March. I’m really looking forward to it- never been. It is expensive, though.
If you treat them well and with friendliness and kindness and also bring your they will treat you well!
We take an annual vacation in Canada after previously owning property there. Like anywhere don’t stick out as a rowdy tourist!
Spent 9 days in Quebec in the fall, and I LOVED IT!! I was raised in a NE city that was probably 70% French-Canadian, and every time I heard someone speak it was like I was back in my childhood. It was fun to give my French Canadian surname to hotel check-in clerks without having to anglisize it.
I was just in Italy and people were very kind about the current situation in the US. There’s some empathy and concern. I was definitely welcome.
We’re waiting for our older daughter to get her time off approved; once that happens we’ll be planning in earnest for a mid-fall family trip to the south of France.
H and I have to decide what we’ll do prior to meeting the girls, SIL and BF. A few weeks somewhere. Our daughter keeps telling us that there are places in Europe other than France
Rest assured, you should have no issues as many abroad do not share your concerns.
I think it’s interesting that when I’ve traveled, what questions are asked and what is maybe not.
We once shared a table with a family from Belgium, they said they were celebrating a milestone birthday. I asked which one as we were also celebrating a milestone birthday, seemed the same age. I was admonished that it was very forward, but they did answer. We were the same age
I’ve been asked more than once how I feel about our elections in our country, how I think about our current president and things that I don’t hear from strangers or friends here in the US. Here I avoid talking about politics.
Just a general musing about differences.
Planning airfare to Europe coming this fall, boy flights seem expensive. Hoping they come down, we are traveling in what seems to be off season.
H, D2 and I are going to Scotland in August and just booked the airfare and it is very expensive. We don’t normally travel to Europe in the summer, but H’s family will all be going to Scotland and his nephews have to travel then since they have children. We still have to book our airfare for 5 days in Paris at the end of the trip. Although it will be summer we are staying in a quiet area in the Highlands. D2 has not been to Scotland or Paris since she was a kid so she is really looking forward to the trip.
That sounds like perfect reasoning for a vacation splurge. Enjoy!
I recommend that you periodically check the fares. The last couple of years I’ve been booking refundable tickets, and often the price goes down significantly, so I rebook the exact same flights. It seems to be a formula where flights are very expensive, and then 3-4 months prior, they go down and then jump up at the last moment. I saved thousands of dollars just in the last year doing this.
@busdriver11 - H did book refundable tickets just for that reason.
We are going to Italy in early May. I used google flights but found the best fare by searching the airline websites. I liked how on the Lufthansa website they showed how the fares changed depending on the date we travelled. I ended up leaving a few days earlier but the fare was significantly less.
Phew, just realized we should hustle & renew our Global Entry card—expiring this June/July. Applied this weekend, approved today with no interviews!
H and I were in education so our vacation times were usually during peak seasons (expensive). Now that we are retired, we’re getting used to hanging out at home in the summer when the weather is beautiful in our area. Our general plan is to travel in Jan or Feb, Apr or May and Sept or Oct. This year, we went to Cabo in Jan. We will be going to Japan in late April and London in Sept. I’m always looking for deals!
We have traveled to various parts of Italy with a wonderfully warm and interesting couple. She lived in Italy for 5(?) years and is a full-fledged Italophile. She spends her winter researching every detail of where to go. When we show up in restaurants, the owner and chef run out to kiss her and we often get things not on the menu. He is a med school prof and gives lectures each year so we often get together also with some of their doctor friends.
Next spring, I think we will go with them to an area we have not visited (Piedmont, Marche, Abruzzo, maybe Emilia Romagna or maybe Calabria). We were briefly in Emilia Romagna many moons ago but for a couple of days when we were visiting Tuscany.
