General retirement travel plans

Paso Robles has changed a lot. We were there last year and I was impressed with the shops and the restaurant selection. I think @jym626 did a trip to Paso recently. We go camping in Morro Bay usually once a year and it hasn’t changed much since I went to Cal Poly 45 years ago.

Paso Robles is our favorite place to go for wine tasting. Great restaurants too. We love Hearst Castle and have been there many times. I adore the central coast in the fall.

We had a great time when we stayed in Paso Robles - son had been in a high school summer tech week in San Jose. We picked him up and went to the Hampton Inn. They had wine tasting in the lobby. I would start laundry, pick up some wine and cheese, relax at the pool, check laundry, get more wine, more pool time etc. etc. etc. Good memories.

Pretty soon we will be heading to the Jersey Shore for our annual vacation there. It’s just a nice relaxing time. We have some friends who we are meeting there, and our DD and husband will be joining us for a few days. This is our “easy” vacation because we have been going there for over 30 years.

Love Paso Robles!

My husband reconnected with a friend who has a place on Long Beach Island, and we’ve had two recent visits. It’s quite busy in July. But we really enjoyed the ablity to just walk to the beach and restaurants, something we can’t do when visiting family on Cape Cod.

I have friends with a condo on LBI that they rent out from 7/4ish to Labor Day. I was there for my birthday in June and am looking forward to a September visit when pool and ocean will be nice and warm.

Back from our 28 day roadtrip to the Canadian Maratimes. Trip was amazing. I think i ate some form of seafood on 26 of the days.

Up next is DW’s trip with her sisters to Yellowstone and my trip to WI to see college friends.

In November we are headed to OR for a week

I love summer in northern Michigan (lol, just like the song ) but September is the best month.

After reviewing old photo albums and such, I have determined that we were last in Paso Robles and Solvang 20 years ago. We were last at the Hearst Castle in 1976. Husband thought we must have gone to the Monterey aquarium on that 1976 trip but guess what - it wasn’t built yet! It was all John Steinbeck and Cannery Row in those days. We have established that we are older than the Monterey Bay Aquarium but younger than the Hearst Castle.

I have also determined that Solvang lodging is too expensive so will look at Santa Maria and Cambria and San Simeon - they’re all relatively close just for a place to sleep. But the place we stayed in 2005 in Monterey still looks good!

Don’t forget your puzzle!

I wouldn’t stay in Santa Maria. My apologies to anyone from Santa Maria.

I have a great one with seashells! But the better thing…DD is coming for a few days so it has a chance of getting done!

We stayed at the Allegretto in Paso Robles. Lovely

Wow, never heard of Paso Robles until I read this thread and then yesterday my California kid and his girlfriend flew in prior to their Caribbean dive trip and gave me (in addition to a spa gift certificate and exotic chocolates) a fine bottle of red wine from Paso Robles where he spent his “guy week”. Yes, oddly, the guy gettaway was to a vinyard and the girls went deep sea fishing  ! Anyway, he and his gal started telling me all about this PR place and said we will go next time we visit California, they said I’d love it! Looking forward to it and looking forward to the wine with dinner tonight!

Paso Robles is our favorite wine region in California. Our family has been going there for many years. We love the Pinot Noirs from the region. We also love how it is a more laid back area than Napa.

Well, husband doesn’t want to spend more than three nights on the road and main objectives are Solvang, Hearst Castle, and Monterey, especially the aquarium. The only reason we might - might - stop in Paso Robles is if Highway 1 is still closed in late October and we don’t feel like seeing Pinnacles. We’ve been to wineries before and I’m not much of a wine drinker; my preference is the fruity whites.

So after lunch and wandering Solvang, we’ll put ourselves in position to start the next day at the Hearst Castle. Thinking of staying in Cambria or San Simeon overnight, nothing fancy, just a clean comfortable hotel. Then after the tour the next morning, on up to Carmel and then Monterey for the night. We stayed at the Monterey Bay Lodge 20 years ago and it still looks good!

And the next day start with the aquarium then hopefully down Highway 1, crossed fingers. If not, either Pinnacles or Paso Robles, but either way ending in Santa Barbara where we hope to have dinner with husband’s second cousin who lives there. And if we’re really lucky, they’ll invite us to stay the night.

A little sightseeing the next morning (we were at those wineries 20 years ago), down to Laguna Beach for a late lunch, then home.

Our actual 40th anniversary will be the Monterey to Santa Barbara day but I hope to do a festive meal the night before in Monterey, Carmel, etc.

Be sure to eat at Linns if you stay in Cambria. Yum! Recommended by another cc’er (and you know who you are!)

Since Solvang has been mentioned a couple of times… is there enough to do there for several days, if you have a car? It looks like there’s some good cycling around there, plus wineries, and it seems like a cute town. We would do day trips, but not drive more than about an hour each way. The other day the Worldmark timeshare in Solvang was still available, so… hm…

Thanks in advance

I think there is enough to do for a couple of days around Solvang. Since you like to ride bikes you could do that as well as visiting wineries in the area. The only thing about Solvang itself is that we didn’t think the restaurants in town were very good. We have only stayed there a couple of times as we normally stay in Santa Barbara or Paso Robles.
