Thank you both!! My son (who now lives in Denver) says that Silverthorne/Frisco would be ideal cause you can ski right after the snow.
Found a place that’s semi-affordable (relatively!) in Wildcrest (very dated inside, carpet, etc.). Sounds like we probably should grab that though (given the challenges described re: places further out).
@Jolynne_Smyth I don’t live in Colorado, but we ski there quite a bit. We have stayed in both Dillon and Silverthorne when we ski at Copper, Breckenridge and Keystone. I’m jealous that you will spend 2 months skiing! H and I have talked about doing exactly what you are going to do probably in the winter of 2028.
My Amtrak trip was great. Flew to San Diego, then trains to Oakland and Portland. At each of these stops we stayed with family and friends. Then one night each in Whitefish, MT and Fargo, ND where we stayed in fancy hotels. Then to Chicago and flew home. In most major cities we used local public transportation including ferries, rail, buses, and cable cars.
Yesterday I visited friends for one day in Philadelphia (buses to-from Amtrak, subway home). I am all amtraked out even though I still have two trips or one round trip left on my USA Railpass which expires on Monday.
@showmom858 from your posts you are an expert skier. I’m a relative beginner but enjoy it. My two kids are in CO, so super excited about being closer than 1700 miles away from them for a few months!
Interested to hear if you go forward in 2028 with a multi-month rental. The inventory is tiny so I’d just say start super early! (You probably know that already though!)
I’m a little freaked out about the Ebola outbreak. We are going to Tanzania and Kenya at the end of September. Those countries are supposedly screening everyone going across the border, but you can have Ebola but not show symptoms for 2-21 days.
I would usually think, why worry about it until the time is closer, but we have until June 1st to cancel. That’s when all the money is due, and if we cancel before that, we’re really not out anything except for the travel insurance cost. If we cancel after that, we lose a significant amount of money.
To me it wouldn’t be that tough of call. There is no treatment or vaccine right now. I would cancel, but I am generally more conservative when it comes to health.
Is it with a tour group? If you’re thinking about cancelling I’m sure many other people are too. Maybe if you cancel and things calm down (is that at all likely?) you could re-book later in the summer.
It is with a tour group, and all of their safaris to this destination are sold out for the year. Sometimes openings pop up, but likely most people have paid in full, so they can’t easily swap/cancel.
I am leaning on cancelling, since there would actually only be a loss of $250, though we’d lose what we spent on travel insurance. Like you say, we can always rebook (but probably with someone else).
Actually, I’m pretty sure I’m going to cancel. I mentioned it to my husband and he sounded excited to cancel (if not losing much $$). He immediately came up with ten other suggestions of European trips. Kind of makes me wonder if I was the only one who wanted to do this trip anyways?
Calling on Colorado ski experts - is there a particularly good time to fly out to CO (from East Coast) to get the sales on ski equipment (boots, skis, helmets) this spring/summer?
We plan to ski a lot this season and figured best to buy in CO, take boots for adjustment after first ski (to where purchased), and after season store everything in our son’s big garage…
However, each place I’ve called over the past few months (when asking about timing of their sales) invariably says “Oh come in this weekend - asap - for the best inventory.”
Have a few other trips planned and was sort of thinking end of August but now not sure…?
Traditionally,it was Labor Day weekend, when Gart Brothers had Sniagrab; people camped out on the sidewalks at the old sports castle on broadway to get the best deals on last year’s equipment. All the other ski stores joined in and then it was sales all over town all on Labor Day weekend. Gart Brothers became Sports Authority many years ago and i’m not sure that the labor day sales are any better than they’d be at any other time of the summer.
You can check with Sports Authority, Christie Sports, Larson’s as I’m sure they all have online info about their sales.
My brother is a patroler so buys his equipment through deals they offer the professionals like patrolers, ski school, owners. My sister has a second home in Silverthorne so will buy equipment when the shops up near her home (Silverthorne, Dillon, Frisco) have sales, and often she just runs into them. Christie Sports has stores in all the mountain towns.
My daughter went to Lennie’s (it used to be ski and golf) this weekend for a big sale on golf stuff. $80 golf shirts were $15, so my SIL now has 10 new golf shirts. And golf balls - why anyone needs $60 golf balls escapes me.
