Genetic study reveals surprising ancestry of many Americans

We’re in Maryland. Totally gobsmacked.

Well I’ll be darned:

https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/en-us/articles/202907960-Availability-in-the-state-of-Maryland

^ that’s the health piece. 23andme had a whole advertising campaign centered around a person accessing medical family history, and they were forced to stop.

Maryland does not prohibit pure genealogy dna tests, so far as I know. Check out Ftdna, which is another major dna test company that never advertised the medical side of the tests.

Hayden, I don’t think this is the health piece (but I’d LOVE to be wrong about this):

Is the Personal Genome Service the health piece and not the DNA part?

ETA There’s also the Ancestry.com DNA test.

RGE, I suspect it is. I looked at ancestry.com and FTDNA’s websites amd didn’t find anything that mentioned Maryland.

@joblue, why don’t you contact Ancestry.com or FTDNA.com and ask? (LOL - I wanted to help because I first read your name as GoBlue, and of course I’d want to help! )

I was hoping to find something interesting…nope, just Central Europe/ Western Europe/ British Isles. So much for Great-great-great-great-grandma the Cherokee Princess.

LOL, so true. I haven’t found any direct-line ancestor of historically importance, unless you count a guy back in the 1600s who was an ancestor of mine and an ancestor of George Washington’s wife. I was hoping for an English duke or something, but no-ooooo.

My mothers father was born in Jamaica. Her mom(who had white skin, blond hair & blue eyes and in my older years, have suspected that her dad wasn’t black) was half Irish, half black. My mother did the DNA test last year & was found to be 49% European, 46% African descent and 3% Asian. I find those DNA tests to be fascinating!
