Georgetown Transfer Questions

act: 28
gpa: 88 uw, 91 w

College:

Habitat

Some other ec’s: most notably, worked for local business for two years (receivables, payables). Not sure if I’m qualified for MSB or even Georgetown College. Thanks.

= I actually made a post similiar to this topic, as I didn’t see this thread before. Please excuse me if this isn’t in a proper format or the right place to ask. As it said Georgetown transfer question, I decided to copy my post here. Thanks! =

Hi everyone! I’m new here and just trying to get some advice.

I graduated magnum cum laude with an associates of science from my community college this summer. The two schools I’m looking to transfer are Georgetown or GW. I really would rather transfer to Georgetown as they offer a B.S. in Biochemistry as opposed to GW. I had applied last year to Georgetown, but was rejected. I hadn’t finished my associates at the time. However, since I’ve graduated I’ve decided to try my luck again.

I’m sort of a nontraditional student in a sense, I was homeschooled during my last two years of high school (dual enrollment at my CC), I haven’t taken the SAT/ACT, or taken any APs. I had actually been out of college for almost two years because I needed to work, yet I resumed in 2006 (I was 20 then). I was still working part-time , however. As I ultimately want to become a physician, I’ve began to study for my MCAT (took all the core subjects + 1 semester of physics) while waiting to apply for transfer. All in all, I’d like to know what I could do to improve my chances of transferring to Georgetown or GW. I was also thinking of the University of Maryland or UVA, but because of work, I’d rather stay in the DC area. I took Physics last semester, got a D (did not take it as seriously as I should have). This brought my GPA from about a 3.6 to a 3.4. I want to improve my GPA. I was thinking of taking an AP exam, as I did not realize until a few days ago that colleges do give credit to the AP. I don’t know if I can take the AP because of my age (23). I’ve worked in a doctor’s office since I was 16. I’m proficient in medical billing, conducting interviews with patients, basic medical assistant duties. The doctor I’m working with has a case that she would like me to co-write with her. So getting an article into a medical journal is another notch I can add on my application. I’m also a Phi Theta Kappa member.

Sorry for such a long post, but if anyone would be able to tell me what I could do to make myself look more presentable to Georgetown or any other university so that I could have a better chance of transferring. Thanks in advance!

halime I don’t think you can take the AP exams at this point but you can take credit from a cc that might transfer over but I am not sure. Otherwise you have a lot of unique qualities that to me seem like factors that would warrant an acceptance letter.

Sorry now i am going to be a bit selfish and ask what my chances are:

HS GPA: 3.4 unweighted
SAT: 1500/2230
SAT II: 710 lit, 720 US history, 780 Math 2C
AP’s: USH, Euro, calc, us gov, lang & comp. lit & comp, comp sci
College GPA: 4.0
ECs: in high school I have a substantial number of positions in clubs and national level awards. For college I have two intramural basketball leagues, a national award at NCSC (a georgetown mun conference) and was part of our universities mun conference.

Just some other information: I am a first year and I attend the school of arts and sciences honors program for my state college. Please either alleviate the angst and tell me what you guys think.

I would appreciate if I could be “chanced”. I am applying to Georgetown, George Washington University, Possibly America (Does anyone know much about their Arabic program?), and finally, College of Charleston; safety school. I am in my Sophomore year at CSN and will be transferring to one of the previously mentioned institutions Fall 2010. Alright, I’ll try and make this as clear as possible, and again, I really appreciate anyone’s input! ( : I would be applying to the Arab programs at these schools. At Georgetown it would be the College.

Also, I was wondering if I should send a resume?

Anyways, that should about cut it! I really really would appreciate any help!

Also, I wanted to let any GWU transfer applicants with over 32 credit hours know that you DO NOT HAVE TO SUBMIT YOUR ACT/SAT RESULTS OR YOUR HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT!!! ( :

PA2009

Your test scores are average for Georgetown, but you have an excellent GPA from a grade-deflated school, and you have a good resume. I think you have a great shot at the MSB.

halime

Without going into too much detail, mostly because I have a lot of work to do, I can tell you that you don’t have a shot at Georgetown. Your academic record substantively weakened after your first rejection, and I can’t see why an admissions committee would look to kindly at that. At this point, I don’t think there is much you can do to improve your chances for Georgetown. While excellent academics aren’t a sufficient condition for acceptance, they are nearly a necessary one.

Desert_Fox

You didn’t specify whether you’re applying to the College or SFS (at least as far as I could tell). For the College, I think you have a great shot. For the SFS, I think you have a good shot. It really comes down to how well you express yourself in your essays.

Vegas247

Your GPA is on the lower side for typical Georgetown admits, but it is after three semesters of performance (generally, there’s a regression to the mean the more semesters you do). I’m glad you’re retaking the ACT, and I like your extracurriculars. You wouldn’t be applying to the College per se for Arabic; you’d be applying to the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics. If you can articulate good reasons for wanting to do Arabic at Georgetown (which shouldn’t be hard… I believe there are only two Arabic textbooks in circulation, one of which is published by Georgetown; the program is excellent, since there’s high interest, stellar faculty, and great funding from both the school and the Government). If you play your cards well, I’d say you’d have a good shot at the FLL.

Good luck, everyone!

I actually use the Georgetown Arabic text book…Al Kitaab…Is that worthy to mention in the application? Thanks

No, Vegas, I prob wouldn’t mention that. Everybody uses that textbook.

To flowerhead -

Thanks for the advice! I appreciate that you take the time out to help others figure out where they stand academically. Although you told me I don’t have a shot at Georgetown, this makes me more determined to improve what I look like on paper. I will get into Georgetown.

I am currently at a small private Catholic LAC college; I’m taking more credits [21 (6 more than average) ]and paying extra to take them; at the end of the semester I will have accumulated 45 credits. My major is International Business/Relations

I want to transfer to Georgetown and will hopefully have a 3.95 at the end of the semester (3.92 currently) Georgetown only accepts 60 transfer credits, my high school stats were not great relatively (3.5GPA,5/5 honors 2/5 AP,top 25%,1150SATs,28ACTs,taking SAT2s this month, lots of extracurricular, very good recs, essays and interview are strong points for me) I have great ECs & Volunteer work in college including volunteering internationally next few months in two countries and possibly an internship in South Africa for summer.

I am technically a freshman but do I stand a better chance considering I will be 15 credits above “technical sophomore standing” at the end of the semester?

I am currently a freshmen at UCLA and am hoping to transfer to Georgetown or George Washington .

College GPA: 3.85
HS GPA: 3.7 unweighted, 4.0 weighted
ACT: 29
SAT: 740 writing/ 620 Math/ 630 Reading
8 AP Classes

Lots of extracurriculars: volunteering, tutoring, student leadership, varsity sports etc.

What are my chances???

michaelungerr

It really doesn’t matter what titled you’re accorded (i.e., sophomore standing, junior standing). What matters is the hours you’ve accrued. You will have accrued many hours, and that’s certainly a plus.

pinklola

If you’re applying to Georgetown College, you have a great shot. You have an OK shot at the SFS.

Also, make sure you think fully about the ramifications of going from UCLA to GW. UCLA is clearly a superior school, and is a better deal in terms of cost. I’d definitely not make that shift if I had the choice.

I am applying to georgetown as a transfer for fall 2010 and was just looking over the essays. it says APPROX 1 PAGE EACH. does anyone know if that is one page single spaced or double spaced???

To DABEARS34: I am writing mine as single space because there is just too much information for only one page double spaced.

To flowerhead: Could you chance me?
Applying for sophomore from Virginia Tech to Georgetown (College)
HS:
Rank: 3/555
4.84 W
3.91 UW
SAT: 1370 out of 1600

College:
GPA: 3.87

dabears- I am also doing the same. There is just no way I could fit everything with more than single spaced

what are my chances at MSB if i write my essay on how my gardes are significantly improving? I am a sophmore transfer with mostly 200 and 300 level honors courses. very few introductory and 100 level courses and a great prof. recommendation

HS GPA: 3.3
GPA at Miami University (OH): 3.7
ACT: 26

I think your ACT is low. Your college GPA is really good, but if you are applying as a sophomore they are going to look at your HS transcript more. Do you have any EC’s?

my ec’s include about 100 volunteer hours, captain of hs varsity football team, accounting team in high school (thats my major), i placed in the top ten at the annual district wide competition. i’ve also had many jobs.

my first semester of college i took 20 credit hours, which is the max at Miami and am taking 18 or 21 second semester given i can get permission for excess hours

Two posts in this thread in a single night. I think that’s a first, but lucky for you: I finished my M&A reading.

Regarding spacing, I can’t recall what sort of spacing was appropriate. It’s best to call the admissions office with this sort of question.

Georgetown1

I think you have a great shot. What’s your prospective major?

DaBears34

Your information is tough. I know the MSB is a little easier to get into than the College, but I’m unsure how much slack that’ll cut you. At first glance, I think you have a fair shot.

I don’t think you really need to emphasize the grade trend in an essay; maybe spend an addendum on it. Use your essays for something more informative, such as your personality and why you want to be in the MSB.

To flowerhead:
My prospective major is mathematics… kind of unconventional for most Georgetown applicants I suppose, haha.
