At least several years ago, GaTech would only look at the math and english sections of the ACT, they disregarded everything else. But, I do agree you will have to raise your scores for both UGA and GaTech.

the level of math i am in AP Calc BC, how am i getting a low score on the Math section of the SAT?

also the critical reading? i hate reading but i am good at writing essay. i am in gftd/honors english in school too? what is wrong?:S

As I said, it’s saying something about the education you’re getting. I beat you by 20 or so points on the math portion and i’ve taken standard math all four years of high school. I’m an average math student.

ok, i took algebra 1 in 7th grade, geometry in 8th, 9th gftd/honors alg II, ap stat in 10th, pre-calc in 11th, AP Calc going to take in 12th? maybe its just that i have to review the math concepts from geometry and alg II which was 2-3 years ago

You were further along in math than I was. I took it without learning any precalc. I would guess you should review the earlier stuff.

i have seen online that a 25 ACT on math section only = 570 in SAT math. if i can get a 27 or 28 on math on the ACT, and my reading on the SAT up by 410 to 550 will i then be considered?

what does this mean?

At UGA, the only minimum score requirements in place are the ones required by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia for admission to its four research universities: that is, an SAT-V of 430 and SAT-M of 400, or subscores of 17 on both the English and Math sections of the ACT. If a student takes the SAT or ACT more than once, we will consider the best scores we receive for each section on either exam.At UGA, the only minimum score requirements in place are the ones required by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia for admission to its four research universities: that is, an SAT-V of 430 and SAT-M of 400, or subscores of 17 on both the English and Math sections of the ACT.
Additionally, as with rigor of curriculum, a high score on the SAT or ACT will not compensate for a non-competitive GPA. Your record of three to three-and-a-half years worth of rigorous academic work in the classroom will be the primary focus of any admission decision.

that means all my grades in highschool and the rigor of my courses will be looked at more rather than my low SAT reading score.

It also depends on what part of the state you are in, and if you are a URM. can you advise?

what do you mean, what part of the state i am in?

This is not a hard question-- where do you live???

Applying form a small school in a rural couty will be different than applying from, say Walton, in Cobb County.

fayette county

what is a URM?

“At least several years ago, GaTech would only look at the math and english sections of the ACT, they disregarded everything else. But, I do agree you will have to raise your scores for both UGA and GaTech.”

This is still the case (or at least it was when I applied last year, maybe they’ll change it this year, heh).

A URM is an underrepresented minority

Are you in a large area like Peachtree City, or a small community like Woolsey? It will make a big difference, nbgdog.

Here are stats on the SAT and ACT scores for the middle 50th percent for GA Tech and UGA:

Test Scores Ga Tech:
Middle 50% of
First-Year Students — Percent Who
Submitted Scores
SAT Critical Reading: 590 - 680 96%
SAT Math: 640 - 720 96%
SAT Writing: 570 - 660 96%
ACT Composite: 26 - 30 35%

Test Scores UGA
Middle 50% of
First-Year Students — Percent Who
Submitted Scores
SAT Critical Reading: 560 - 660 96%
SAT Math: 570 - 660 96%
SAT Writing: 550 - 650 96%
ACT Composite: 24 - 29 41%

You should definitely retake the SAT and ACT

I am having trouble getting the table to lay out the way i want. Th last # in each row (the percent) is the percent of students who reported that score (ie the SAT vs the ACT). Hope that is clear

thanks, i live in peachtree city, underrepresented minority? i still have no idea what that is?

You don’t want to be at Ga. Tech with scores in the lower end of their range. It’s brutal. I had several friends from HS who had scores in the 1000-1100 range (old scale) who went to GT and got nailed with the math. If they survived the math, the physics got them later.

If you struggle with AP Calc next year, think hard about GT.

ok so you are saying that your freinds got accepted with thier low SAT scores. I had a pretty tough pre-calculus teacher in highschool (11th grade) gftd/honors, but i still managed to make an A with the 3 points at the end of the semesters. i got a 95 first semester and a 90 second. i think i will be alright in AP Calculus. My SAT math doesn’t show that I am good at math but out of the kids in my Pre-Calculus (Analysis) class I had one of the higher grades? so even if i get into tech i will be able to do well in Math, I think.

You might want to spend a little time reviewing some of the pinned (saved) threads in several of the forums that will answer many of your questions about acronyms and what terms such as underrepresented minority means. YOu look like you have been a member of CC for a while, so I would assume many of these terms ar familiar to you.
