I would not be surfing or paddle-boarding off the coast of Nantucket in May but perhaps the OP has a wetsuit and is made of sturdier stuff. It can be BONE CHILLING at that time of year!
It’s not exactly warm water off the New England coast in the heat of summer…unless you consider high 50’s warm water.
If they want warm beach weather, heading south would be a better choice.
I’ve heard good things about St. Pete beach in FL (not sure it counts as east coast, but isn’t any further than KW). It’s on my list to check out…someday.
Has anyone stayed at Tween Waters in Captiva? That looks interesting. I am also looking at Amelia Island.
The Moorings on Islamorada is heavenly, very private, but you can walk to Cheeca Lodge (if you want a change of scene). We also loved The Lodge on Little St. Simon’s Island, a nature lover’s paradise.
Gotham_mom, we actually have the Cheeca Lodge booked for two nights and then two other nights at the Reach in Key West. We stayed at Cheeca years ago and loved it. But, hubby is complaining about driving almost 2.5 hours after a three hour flight after a two hour drive to JFK. I get it. I thought it was only an hour and a half, but I guess the road can get congested. Our initial flight was arriving at 11 a.m. but now we are arriving at 1 p.m. So, by the time we rent the car and get there we are losing an entire day and it is $$$$. Currently looking at Captiva or Amelia island. But yes, I want to go back to Cheeca. I heard Cheeca brought the Moorings.
The drive from Jacksonville Airport to Amelia Island is pretty quick. I’d love to stay there at some point. We went there just for lunch the day we left Jacksonville. It was perfect.
St. Augustine FL
Maybe stay with Key West but change your flights to Miami and rent a convertible and drive there. Get a non-stop early flight into Miami (I bet it’s cheaper), drive along the keys and arrive in Key West having enjoyed the views along the way. Stop at a few spots to take photos, feed the tarpon, grab a snack/lunch, etc. Same on your departure day just in reverse. You could even spend a night or teo in Islamorada, break it up. My wife and I did this year’s ago.
I second this idea. My family has done this several times (minus the convertible). Lots of great places to stop along the way down the Keys, including the utterly gorgeous Bahia Honda beach.
We rented a convertible and drove from Miami airport to Islamorada for a romantic getaway at The Moorings. It was fabulous just give yourself lots of time to drive back to the airport, we had hellish traffic, almost missed our flight.
