geting wifi at home for student

I am going to agree with everyone who said you should just go to your internet provider to get wifi set up in your home. When we moved into a new apartment in NYC, D2’s room wasn’t getting very good signal. I am pretty tech savvy, so I was going to get an extender and do it myself, but I decided to call the service provider. I told them if they couldn’t fix it then I was going to go with another provider, so “just make it happen.” They rewired the whole apartment and put in another router in D2’s room. All free of charge. Now when things don’t work, I can just call them to fix it.

OP, make sure the wifi works every where. Take your kid’s mac and walk around the house to make the signal is strong enough every where.

The OP can get wifi with Uverse, DSL, cable…any ISP. They all have wifi capability with the right wireless router.

The provider doesn’t matter one bit…get what works for you.

Right, which is why I assume that the OP --who has said that she currently has AT&T – will want to stay with AT&T. Why would she want to switch from a company with pretty good customer service to one which is notorious for its poor service?

I suggested that the OP call ATT because my experience in the years that I had DSL was that they kept changing pricing structures --and always very happy to shift a customer to a newer, better, lower cost structures. So if she’s had DSL for a number of years without a change, it’s a pretty good bet that she’ll probably end up with improved service at lower cost if she makes that call.

There is absolutely no reason for her to change service providers and she didn’t say that she wanted to do that. If she uses that ATT-provided email, then a change is service providers will require a change in email – which would be a particular hassle for someone who is not technically savvy.

I am learning a lot. Thanks so much.

Why I refuse to deal with Comcast, no matter what they offer – Comcast customer service call:
<a href=“Listen to the Comcast customer service call from hell | PCWorld”>http://www.pcworld.com/article/2454222/listen-to-the-comcast-customer-service-call-from-hell.html</a></p>

I heard that call when it first went viral…and it really shows an amazingly clueless customer service rep. I can’t stand dealing with the cable companies. We have Charter, and they are no better.

ATT can be difficult too, but we have at least gotten out questions answered…and they have willingly offered us a lower rate every time we called!

OMG
I read the comments, they sound even worse than advertised.
The kudzu of the business world.

My experience with ATT has always been that the billing and service department is wonderful --they answer questions directly, they are genuinely helpful in answering questions, they are easily accessible by phone or online chat. Plus, at least with me, they have been more than helpful over the years whenever I’ve had a disputed charge to bill. My d. had some mishaps with cell phone use while traveling overseas – including some rather long accidental butt-calls – and ATT dropped those charges, no questions asked.

Tech support --not so much. If the connection goes down, it’s a waste of time to call them – and the most irksome thing is that they expect customers to use a web based interface to test and resolve connection issues… which of course isn’t going to work when the problem is that you can’t get connected to the internet. But I haven’t had too many issues with Uverse --just sometimes the modem/router needs a reboot to re-establish the connection.

Dealing with Comcast… I dread the moment I have to call them. We only have their cable, and if that goes out, we just sit and wait until some of the neighbors calls them.
