Getting new smart phone, need advice

@collage1

There are plenty of iPhone SE models still for sale new as they just very recently went out of production. As well as tons for sale from the commercial refurbers. Same guts as the 6. Apple will still be supporting that small phone for several years to come. Unlike the 5 which is now beyond software updates.

I was a hard core small phone aficionado but finally went to the slightly larger form factor of the 6s since it had some must have features unavailable on the SE. still pretty small so I’ve gotten used to it.

I like my iphone 6s. My sisters have it, so it’s easy for us to message one another – somehow it glitches when I try sending photos and attachments to android phones if more than one person is on the receiving end and not all of them have iphones.

I like the 6s because it has the lightning cable and the fingerprint ID and the headphone jack. I will keep it as long as I can. H and D love the OnePlus android phone. S has a iphone 8, I believe.

@collage1 there is one newer iPhone that is about the same width as our SE iPhones, but it is a little longer. I forget which model…one of the 10s I think. Anyway…that’s what I’ll be getting when my SE is no longer supported!

I vote for new phone, older model. The prices of the latest and greatest are insane, and drop like a rock after a year or when the next one comes out. I bought a new in box S7 off of ebay last year for $200. It blows me away that people pay $1000 for a phone. But, I am rough on mine. I live on a farm and it’s on me all the time. $1000 is a lot of money on the line since I usually end up replacing every couple years due to damage.

For used phones this is a very respected site to sell your old one and to buy a new used one
Many people on this site buy several new phones and keep one them put the others on this site after testing. So they phones are barely used for the most part. Some are used phones in great condition. Just a FYI

DH and I (and son) have iphone 5s, each five years old, one battery replacement. We are going to try and hold out a few more months now that it will no longer get software updates, and then probably will get iphone 11. I think I’ll spring for more memory. 16gb is hard to work with after five years.
We keep our technology and apple products are great for that. We also have a 7 year old imac and (I’m typing this on) a 10 year old macbook pro that are still barely hanging in there as our primary computers.

@Parentof2014grad the iPhone 6 I just replaced only had 16GB of memory. This last year, I was forever having to go in and delete old text messages, random photos, etc b/c I’d run out of storage. It would also offload apps when I ran out of storage, so I’d go to use my bank app or some other app and have to download it all over again which is a PITA when you are in a hurry. My new phone is 64GB and boy, so glad I don’t have to worry about storage now.

I will say, it’s an adjustment going to the 11 from the 6. No more home button which I am so used to to using since I also have an iPad, no more fingerprint login as a result which I prefer to the new facial recognition, the toggle to close apps is not user friendly - you have to swipe up or something but it takes me multiple tries which is a PITA. I also noted earlier that I can no longer use my favorite earbuds (Panasonic brand which I love so much compared to the hard plastic Apple earbuds). I can’t charge my phone and use my Apple earbuds which sucks on a long drive when I’m using Waze, but also trying to listen to an audiobook (kids in car so I use my earbuds). Not only that but my cell phone holder for the car doesn’t hold the larger phone so with this new phone, I’ve had to purchase a bunch of new accessories - new case, splitter so I can use headphones/charger simultaneously, and new holder for my car. I haven’t tried my armband for running yet to see if the phone still fits in that. So while I do love that I finally have a phone that is fully functioning compared to my old 6, it does have a bunch of quirks that this curmudgeon is still getting used to.

@Parentof2014grad. My daughter bought a iPhone 5 in Indonesia when her Motorola crapped out and loves the size. She doesn’t like the new ones and doesn’t like their larger.

I have bought several Mac book pros and ipads from here. This is an official Apple store by Apple. Has the same warranty as new. It is the person that bought it one week and then returned it usually unopened. Again same warranty but you save a little money. Plus some interesting configurations on the MacBook pros… FYI

If you wait till Spring and newer cheaper IPhone https://www.macrumors.com/2019/09/04/apple-to-launch-low-cost-iphone-early-2020/

There is a niche market of ruggedized mobile phones that you may want to consider, although reviews of such do not mention other characteristics like frequency of security software updates.

@Knowsstuff I’m actually grudgingly happy to get a larger phone than the 5s. My close vision isn’t what it once was and I’ve resisted wearing glasses full time. The 5s fits in my pocket but it’s getting harder and harder to read texts!
@4kids4us my husband will hate that learning curve. Maybe I’ll send him to one of those classes at the apple store.

@cshell2… Get an Otterbox case for your phone. They are meant to be dropped… Lol…

I have one! I am really horrible with phones. I go way beyond just dropping. I’ve dunked them in stock tanks, had them stepped on by horses, and had one fall out of my pocket mowing lawn on the rider…then drove over it.

^^^ You need a hip pack!

@cshell2. I am cracking up here… Very funny… OK… You seem very nice but you might be hopeless ?.

Patients tell me… “Doc it hurts to do this” I tell them “Then don’t do that”… Lol… (old joke but true).

Honestly , a good friend of mine uses a hip phone holster that locks down tight.

You could tape it to your person with https://www.homedepot.com/p/Gorilla-1-7-8-in-x-35-yds-Heavy-Duty-Duct-Tape-60035/100550069… That stuff works great ??.

storage shouldn’t be a consideration for iPhone (or any other phone) since you can always get cloud storage for cheap. iPhone - 50Gb - $1 a month, 200Gb - $3 a month, 2TB - $10 a month. I have 8,000+ photos going back 19 years (age of my kid) and only recently did I have to upgrade from 50Gb to 200Gb.

OP here. Thanks for all the feedback.

Hubby says no to Apple, so iPhones are out.

I looked at a Samsung 9 Note. Seemed pretty nice. I looked at a Google Pixel 3. I like that I can write on the Note. I’d probably use that feature a lot. I’m going to check out prices.

Sprint offered an amazing deal. $0 for the phone, cheap monthly fee for the family, plus a $100 free MasterCard gift card. No doubt there’s a catch, or it’s not actually that good a deal.

Does your husband need a new phone too?

Just downloaded Android 10. Nice fixes and features. . If you don’t have a Google phone you might get this by the first of the year ??.

Hubby ordered a Samsung 9 Note. I will let you all know what I think. Thanks for your feedback.
