Getting rid of the gray?

HAHA! Sorry mathmom but I don’t want to look like a grandma yet! ;)

Hey Classof2015…

My stylist is great with color–which is normally not the case…I should probably find someone better for haircuts.

anyhow–yes coloring

I go about every 6 weeks for roots and touch up by my ears–Really the only gray for me thats annoying is the bit by my ears…

I als have highlights and low lights put it.

Just recently I had a pow-wow with the colorist that I wanted the base color to be much closer to the natural color–which has seemed to have darkened…
That tweak made all the difference…
Except for right by my ears…the regrowth matches and the highlights/lowlights still look great.

All that is to say is that maybe with a base color close to your natural shade and some low lights, you will get the dimension you want in your hair.

Hope all is well.
Hugs.

I confess to not reading every post, but for women who color their own hair if they cover all hair each time, the old growth may get darker and darker each time you color. The gray near your scalp is what needs to be covered for most of the processing time and then put color on the entire length for the last five minutes or so. I use Preference or Excellence by L’Oreal. I used to use one and switched to the other. It is the box that is gold not pink.

I think it leaves my hair softer than having it done professionally. I was just spending too much time in the beauty shop to get it colored. Do choose a color a shade or two lighter than your natural ( before gray) color. Otherwise, it is too stark.

We could all look as gorgeous as emmylou if all our pics where taken by pro photographer and touched up! Or we had a stylist do our hair and make-up every day. Have you ever seen Oprah without make-up on!

^LOL Too true, but she looks good even in untouched up photos. What great bones! Sigh…

I want to look like a very hip and edgy grandmother.

So - my question is: What color eyeglass frames go best with gray or silver hair?

for the fashionable grandmama?

thanks fogfog!

So many good ideas here and different views – maybe I should have called the thread “50 shades of gray”. :)

This thread is why I sometimes visit CC even though my children are way past the age of needing it! And what a great punchline, Classof2015.

I get my roots done every five weeks or so with highlights once or twice a year and lowlights if the highlights get too brassy or uniform looking; trying to use color at home is a recipe for disaster for me, I am sure. Never colored my hair until the gray started to show when I saw in my early 40s–original color was really nice, dark brown with noticeable natural red and gold highlights. It is somewhat expensive and time consuming to go so relatively often but I don’t wear makeup and am another one of the LLBean/Lands End people, with the occasional Brooks Brothers or Talbots splurge.

I’ve noticed that people who look good with gray hair are either very pretty and/or elegant or have features that look well-cut short hair, and a good short hair cut is hard to find, and needs frequent maintenance. Eventually I will be too old to look right with non-gray hair but I hope to hand on this way for a few more years, though I’ll never look hip or edgy, grandmother or not.

alh…I have seen some awesome purple frames on a friend who is gray. She also has some printed maroon/burgundy ones that look good.

I have been coloring my hair forever. I was a towhead, as were my kids, and I consider it an inalienable right to always have blonde hair. I have very little grey. A few years ago, it got too light and brassy and the salon reworked my whole color plan … darker base with lots of highlights. It looks awesome.

Last week, my own stylist/colorist was out and the salon owner did my hair. She tweaked the color and it’s awesome.

I think what looks good with grey would depend on your skin tone, keeping in mind that a little more color may be needed if your skin & hair are light.

You’re luck to have a good stylist cnp55. I used to be a hair dresser but I have been doing my own hair for years, as I havent found one ( that I can afford) that meets my standards!
( I do enjoy getting my hair washed and styled though, it’s so relaxing)

Darker hair seems to go gray more attractively than lighter hair. Those I know with blond or red hair just seem to get more faded- although there are those like H, who at 57 has basically the same dirty blond hair he’s had most of his life. ( unfortunately he doesn’t have as much of it as he used to):(

Which is my problem too. I kind of like the lighter hair, but I’d like to wear it longer, however it gets just a little thin on top if it is more than 6"or 7" & I don’t want a mullet!

raises hand since I went gray purple is my new best friend.

All those blonde years I wouldn’t go within 5 miles of anything purple.
