At that age, although I would never let on, I was so disappointed if anyone gave me clothing of any kind. However, I always enjoyed age appropriate jewelry. My D was the same way, so it’s not always one or the other. You do have to know your audience.

HImom, I wouldn’t necessarily jump to conclusions about people who seem inconsiderate about your D’s allergies. Most people are just lousy listeners, focused on the next thing they are going to say. They may vaguely remember you mentioning something about perfume and your D and have the association in their minds, but not the connotation.

H once told his secretary about an absolutely horrible experience we had at a well known restaurant in our area. Many months later, someone called her, asking where to buy H a restaurant gift certificate. Wouldn’t you know, all she vaguely remembered was the name of the awful place. So we ended up with a gift certificate to the one place to which we said we’d never return! Not typical of the secretary to be forgetful and not passive aggressive. It made a good story, though.

Most kids & young adults these days get all the clothing they want or need from their folks so would prefer something they don’t ordinarily get & would consider “a treat.” Jewelry is good if you have some sense of their taste–tricky otherwise to get something they’d like AND wear.
