Girls in "Boys" Roles

My daughter played Sandy in Grease one HS year, and the next, (different casting and musicdirector) was cast as the Jester in OUAM! I think part of the fun of OUAM is that it is all about casting against type, including the lead, W. I am no doubt biased, but as my daughter is a strong dancer, I thought she stole the show. You can have alot of fun with this part, and it requires alot of stage time. Good luck with HS music directors, everyone! We’ve had 3 due to $$ cuts, etc…

lynnm and CT Mom - Bravo to your children at BoCo. My D originally didn’t want to apply there because it’s so close to home. But after seeing Iolanthe, the school is back on her list. It was a challenging idea and a great show!

My D played the minstral in Once Upon A Mattress. Her songs were difficult but she pulled it off, and I don’t think the audience had any idea it was suppose to be a male role. The role of Jester is quite fun. Good luck to your D.

I direct at a High school and in my Mattress we cast the jester as a femele. The songs worked perfectly, and I designed a jester costume in 1/2 baby pink satin 1/2 baby blue satin. It had a little frilly skirt! My jester and my minstrel had a little side thing going on.

Sounds adorable. Looks like our Jesters will be wearing balck velvet… and my D, at 5’6" is taller than the minstral!
