@ClarinetDad16 - it is definitely before the audition results, so it is difficult to frame even the hypothetical question. I will try to express what I think the spirit of the question is - would one accept a decent offer today at the risk of giving up a potential free ride? And that will have to remain undocumented. B-)
You need a full tuition scholarship to match UNT
@ClarinetDad16 - Yes, that is pretty fair to say. Since all of the places on the list (and even places not on the list) would fully meet the educational/performance objectives, it is as if only âhome runsâ at other places could create a circumstance in which deep analysis could be conceived. All that is assuming a passing audition at UNT - fingers crossed and all that.
I have a huge list of slogans I should start a T-shirt company with. S and I were chatting, and he liked this as a music audition t-shirt (includes drum corps experiences):
âWe donât need you to be perfect NOW. ⊠we just need someone to be perfect now.â
@GoForth let us know if your son hears anything from Grammy camp jazz. They should be calling winners anytime with an announcement next week if history is any indication. My D found out yesterday that she is a winner for jazz voice for 2017 YoungArts so very exciting. That being said, Grammy jazz only takes 2 altos for the choir so Iâm not holding my breath. Hopeful though.
@SpartanDrew - I will. I know the odds of getting into the Grammy Jazz Camp are âlowâ, but I had thought about how much more unconfidential it would be if S got into the group - he would obviously be 1 of 2 named people. I already figured that if someone really wanted to, they could derive who S is even now, so I have been careful about posting anything that might be a problem (not that I really have had anything negative or weird to say which I then held back). Getting into that group would be information worth sharing here since it can shed a light on the situation and enable better advice or insights to come about. I can say that Sâs unlisted Grammy Jazz video was viewed 6 times by someone other than us, according to the YouTube hit counter.
Wow thatâs great. And funny. Iâve counted our unlisted âviewsâ as well and my D has had 3. At first I thought wellâŠmaybe the third time was for the âcommentsâ the applicant gets when they donât get a spot and they get their feedback. D auditioned last year and got adjudicator feedback. I will also say I was able to see one video of a vocalist auditioning that was unlisted for some reason which was weird. Anyway, I hadnât really been very hopeful but having D win in jazz voice for Youngarts makes me feel that she is hopefully at least on the short list for Grammy camp. But still not holding my breath. For her at least she can try again next year. I did get a tweet from Grammy foundation that they will post results shortly after Thanksgiving. So a bit later than I thought but probably a week or so until we know. Good luck and keep us posted!
@SpartanDrew - I am not in the tweet-world, so thanks for mentioning that info. I YouTubed and Googled pretty hard to see who had won in the past and if they had an unlisted audition video, or just seeing a video of the final group playing out here and there. They are certainly very good. S is pretty good, but feels that there are often a couple entries on his instrument that somehow sounds better, cleaner than his. He mentions those mistakes he makes that I guess only musicians can see.
Believe me I get it. When I first listened to Dâs video I thought âwow thatâs a great submissionâ. Truly. Then after watching it many more times (too many) I have found all of the little mistakes she made. Itâs easy to do. You critique and pick apart. Thatâs what makes them good. I watched a Grammy camp audition video of a girl that blew me away and she was just listed as a Finalist in Youngarts. Many of them are great and it all boils down to what the adjudicators are looking for. Grammy camp in no way should make or break oneâs career path.
Perfect example, Julia Goodwin, an AMAZING vocalist who won Songbook Academy (which D was a finalist in this year) then was a finalist and Presidential Scholar for Youngarts, auditioned for Grammy camp and didnât get in from what I can gather. Youngarts Presidential scholarâŠamazing jazz vocalist, Didnât get into Grammy camp. Another jazz vocalist who made Grammy camp twice, finalist for Youngarts yet didnât make top ten for Songbook Academy. Every competition is different and doesnât define any artist.
Any unofficial whispers of GRAMMY camp phone calls this week?
Only silence for us so far.
Dying to hear but have to believe those that are in have been called. They said they will announce âshortly after Thanksgivingâ. Iâm pretty sure D is out. She won Merit for jazz voice for YoungArts so Iâm happy that she might be on a short list but even then they only take 2 altos soâŠ
Anyone hear anything? Crickets hereâŠ
I was going to bundle up some info for a report in a couple days, but since there is interest, S received his Grammy Jazz feedback. He did not make it in but received analysis and good words from the Grammy reviewer.
Was the feedback helpful? Did they indicate what they were specifically looking for? As an FYI, I know Justin Dicioccio is leaving MSM at the end of the semester. Iâm not sure what impact ( if any) it will have on GRAMMY Camp Jazz Session or the relationship between GRAMMY Camp Jazz and MSM. It also seems that GRAMMY foundation funding is lower than in previous years. Regular GRAMMY Camps this summer are not offering any boarding and this year GC Jazz is not covering airfare which is s huge departure for them. Anyone have any insight?
D also didnât get in and also got very good adjudicator feedback to take into next yearâs audition.
Please, college emails, just stop!
The booking of hotels and planning of road-trips is on my plate now. There are 2 confirmed auditions and one âunofficially confirmedâ audition, with 1 more TBD. The fifth school, William Paterson does not have live auditions, and its pre-screen-audio-only was submitted on time. It would be likely that we would try to schedule a visit there if S is auditioning at SUNY Purchase in late Feb.
S has made contacts with a majority of the bass professors, and is currently just working on his normal bass workload - various concerts, gigs, and home projects. There is a wedding gig today for example. So, we are now in relatively-quiet mode. Just tossing around ideas on how to answer a question like âAre we your top choice?â if asked at an audition, when finances will play a considerable role.
I think itâs fine to say something like âI am very interested in this program or this is one of my top choices and that finances will need to be taken into consideration when it comes time to make a final decisionâ.
Frost school just sent out an email that pre-screen review has wrapped up, and the jazz candidates should be notified by Jan 6.
