Going on a cruise

I think jeans are perfectly fine for the other non=formal nights, especially if they are dark in color and have no rips and tears. In fact, I saw many people in jeans on our cruise. There are photos taken on formal night and you have and “opportunity” to purchase them if you like. We did end up purchasing a photo from our formal night with our friends who cruised with us, as well as a number of H’'s classmates who were also cruising with us.

True story–H had THOUGHT he had packed his dress slacks but when he unpacked onboard ship, he discovered to his horror that he only had dark jeans and a nice pair of dark navy or black warm up knit pants. I believe he wore his dark jeans with the sports coat and dress shirt one night and the dark warm up knit pants the other formal night (with the dress shirt and sports jacket). No one commented and I don’t think other bothered to look and realize that his pants were not as formal as he had hoped. We did not try to rent or purchase dressier slacks.

My post from yesterday isn’t here. Anyway, I had 2 cruise tips. The bathroom has virtually no place to put all your toiletries, brushes, shampoos, makeup, etc. Purchase a 10 to 20 pocket shoe holder that will hang from inside the bathroom door. You can get them for $20 or under at Target, Walmart. We used almost every pocket between the 2of us. Got that tip from cruisecritics. Another was two take ginger pills. At first hint of nausea, start taking them. We had to do it twice and it worked for both of us. Bought at a Whole Foods.

Thank you, @conmama

Our dollar tree has the shoe holders. I’ve used them several times. Also, the cabins are very stingy with outlets. You might want to take a small power strip for tablets/phone/camera charging. I hate when people “cheat the dress code”. It doesn’t hurt to dress up on formal nights. If it does then eat elsewhere!

We tend more formal than the couple we usually cruise with. I wear formal or dressy cocktail for formal nights, my H wears a suit. We both change for dinner every night. Our friends are the opposite. My friend’s idea of formal dress is a corduroy skirt and running shoes. Her H wears jeans. Always.

We’ve never had a problem getting into dinner together. I asked a crew member about how stiff dress codes were, and he said that unless you try to wear swimsuits into dinner, they turn a blind eye. He said - and it sure made sense - that they have to assume it’s possible that the airline or the cruise ship lost your luggage, so if they lost your suitcase with your formal clothes then denied you entry into dinner, they’d have a very unhappy customer.

Yes about the power strip! Also, I don’t think you can use the phone because of the charges, but it will be nice to have for a clock at night.

One more hint - virtually all walls on a ship, including those in your cabin, are metal. Bring some magnets and you can hang your daily schedule, notes to each other, hooks on your walls, increasing your storage.
