Has she considered Holy Family University?
I think that acceptance into Temple’s BSN program or transfer into another university directly into their BSN program of course, is the best option. It would save 1.5 more years of school and cost after the initial BS degree. The competition is very tough because it is a highly sought after major and many schools are not even accepting transfers due to lack of slots. Does she have other applications out yet and would she consider another area of the country?
What is your budget?
Is your DD getting her green card soon? If not, does she plan on returning home and working in your home country?
If she can’t get into the nursing program at Temple, then either the publics mentioned above or the small Catholics that have nursing might be the best option if they accept transfers.
I would not go forward in another degree and then seeking nursing as a 2nd degree if she truly wants BSN.
Hello everyone. bjkmom- no, my daughter hasnt yet considered Holy Family University. ECmomx2-she is sending her applications to lot of colleges in PA. She does not mind moving out of PA too if the college is good. mom2collegekids -Cost maybe approx $35000/- but it should not affect her job prospects after graduation. No she does not have a green card. SOSConcern - yes, even i feel she should transfer to Nursing rightaway instead of as a second degree.
Thank you all for giving your suggestions. Do keep sending your views!
$35000 a year of for what’s left?
Does anyone know if having/not having a green card will affect her ability to take boards?
You should also have an idea about where she wants to live after college. Not everyone’s licenses transfer easily from state to state.
She should be able to take the NCLEX without her permanent residence card with proper identification. There are some states that have agreements that will allow licensed RN’s to work without applying for another state’s license. The NCLEX is a national exam and she would not have to retake the exam to transfer from state to state. If she moves to a state that does not have an agreement, she would have to apply for a license and pay a fee. Employers can, in some instances, sponsor her for a green card.
Thank you very much kandcsmom and ECmotherx2 for your replies. We were not aware of this at all. Where can I look for the information about transferring from one state to another? Would the respective colleges where she is applying be able to give the details on this please?
Sincere thanks again.
@klgn17, here is a link to the information about compact nursing license states and requirements: http://nursinglicensemap.com/faqs/nursing-licensure-compact/
Thank you so much ECmotherx2 for the link…
I sincerely appreciate all of you for your views and guidance…Really hope everything works out well for my daughter.
When will she hear from Temple? Hope she will have some great choices.
ECmotherx2- She will hear from Temple only in May 2016. Thank you for your best wishes.
Am sorry for the delay in replying.
@ECmotherx2 yes the NCLEX is a national exam but it varies from state to state. I was educated and took the boards in NY. When I went to work in NJ I only had to fill out a form and send $40. When I moved to Ohio I had to have 2 background checks, fingerprints, send in a list of everywhere I had worked and college transcripts. No, I did not have to take a new test but there are things to consider.
The NCLEX is a national computerized test that uses a bank of questions that differ from test taker to test taker. The questions that the computer generates become progressively more difficult as it determines the level of ability of the individual. Some people may only need to take the minimum amount of questions, others may have to answer more than 200. There are 24 states that have formed a compact, that is, your license in the state that you took the NCLEX is accepted, no further application or fees are necessary. If you test outside of the compact states or you move to a state outside the compact, you will have to apply to the new state for an endorsement license. I wouldn’t let any of this be a concern.
Sorry I could not reply to any of you earlier as I was having problems with my laptop. Lot of info from ECmotherx2 and kandcsmom…Thanks for your inputs.
