Good GPA, but bad ACT?

@spriggs1 Yes, it is possible to change your major to the major of your choice that is not direct entry. My D actually changed her major at her orientation (from DUS to BioBehavioral Health in the college of HHD), so now she is in that college and not in the DUS program. I don’t know which majors are NOT direct entry in the business school. Just look on PSU’s website and look at the college of business and they will tell you what the entry requirements are. That being said, I know that a lot of people start out DUS and change into business so its definitely possible.

According to the Smeal Entry To Major page below, a student MUST either be already in Smeal or be in DUS to be accepted into the program by Junior year:

So, essentially it won’t hurt my plans to get a major in the business field if I apply as DUS because your first two years are on general courses right?

Also, do you get financial aid for the summer session at PSU main?

@spriggs1 Yes, that’s right about DUS. As for financial aid, Penn State is notorious for not giving any financial aid. If you were in the honors college, then they give you something like $5500 in merit aid, but that’s usually it. Penn State does not usually give need or merit based aid unfortunately. Student and Parent loans would be available for summer session. The cost is definitely a factor for a lot of people in attending summer session - or attending PSU in general - because it is a very expensive school that does not give much aid.

I heard there are not many internship opportunities in university park, is that true?

I’m in the range of 1630-1700 on my SAT’s if I were to apply to PSU with those current stats along with say 1650 sat score but also apply priority DUS and check the summer session box how would my chances be like now since my scores went up by atleast 200 points.

Your chances are definitely better than they were. Definitely put summer and apply DUS…that gives you the very best shot. If you don’t get into main campus with those stats, at least you know that you tried everything you could. Put an alternative campus as well…Otherwise if you don’t get into main, you will be denied outright and they will ask you to chose another campus. If you put another campus, you will likely be offered admission into the branch should you not get accepted for fall or summer. Keep in mind that they start with fall admission, then move on down the line until you fit the criteria. So, in other words, putting a branch campus alternative in no way increases your chances of being denied from UP campus.

Good luck and congrats on bringing your SAT’s up by so many points!

So, I received my official sat scores and I got a 1590( 550 w, 530 cr, and 510 m). Those scores will be sent to Penn state and then my application will be complete which means I applied before the priority deadline. I applied undecided and summer. But, I don’t know if I will go in, hopefully I will. Through naivance states that i have a good chance of getting in comparison to other students in my school. Do you think naivance is creditable with my chance of getting in? What do you think my chances of getting in are now?

@Spriggs1 My school also uses Navigant which can definitely help but one thing to watch is student athletes. For example, only one out of eight people got into this school but his gpa was a 2.6 with a 1660 sat. He was an athlete

Naviance

I noticed that too. On the accepted graph on naivance I find myself in a cluster of accepted students which don’t seem like athletes because there GPAs seem too high.

Any shot someone could be an athlete and have a high GPA? Just wondering.

@PennsyDad – athlete + high GPA = John Urschel perhaps?

In my school, at least, many athletes didn’t apply to Penn state last year. it just looks like there was mostly academic students.

I guess the point I was trying to make was…I didn’t realize being an athlete and having a high GPA were mutually exclusive. I have known a lot of smart athletes over the years.

I’m sorry if my comment offended you. Im an athlete too, but I thought you meant that the best of our schools athletes got into Penn state. If that was the case than only one applied and got in and his scores and GPA weren’t the best.

What is your opinion on my chance of getting in to Penn state main at my current and final conditions.
1590 sat, 3.59 unweighted GPA, 3.95 weighted GPA, DUS, summer session option, and priority deadline. My gpa is where it’s at for PSU but I’m just worrying about my SAT score.

Our friend got accepted with a 1610 sat, 26 act, and 3.6 gpa, so it’s definitely not out of questions

@pitt2021 Was your friend accepted this year or in the past?

@zipbags in college now
