Good merit aid for academic schools (small-mid) with dance minor not in NE and not in small rural area

This list is incredibly helpful. I know I wrote “not the NE”, but you are such a good source of info, and perhaps next year, we will change our mind on her being that far away. Consequently, would you mind adding in NE schools to your breakdown after all, so we have a complete understanding of what all is out there? Thanks so much.

The source I am using includes the number of first AND second majors who graduated with majors in dance in 2022. This is different from what is in College Navigator and other sources that only count the first major, and so if dance was a double major, it can end up being really under-counted if it’s the second major.

Additionally, one of the factors that might need/want to be reconsidered is the overall size of the university. Dance programs, for one, are likely to make a big school feel much smaller. Same thing is true with honors colleges and such. Thus a more “academicky” environment might be found with more dance opportunities, but it would be within a larger campus. As an example, U. of Kansas has about 19k undergrads and you can read about its dance program and honors program, and it also gives very generous merit off a base price of around $40k/year for out-of-state students.

Once again, these schools are sorted by my guesses as to what your D’s chances for admission might be. This does not include any auditions that may be required for dance programs, nor does it include the likelihood of getting sufficient merit aid (though the schools listed all offer enough merit aid to bring the price within budget).

Extremely Likely (80-99+%)

  • Marymount Manhattan (NY): About 1600 undergrads

  • Point Park (PA ): About 2400 undergrads…part of a consortium with other Pittsburgh colleges like UPitt, Duquesne, Carnegie Mellon…so could either take classes at other schools, or could look into other schools and take dance classes here. Duquesne is a 0.5 mile walk from Point Park while Pitt is 2.3 miles away from PPU.

  • Slippery Rock (PA ): About 6800 undergrads

  • SUNY at Purchase: About 3100 undergrads

  • SUNY Brockport: About 5100 undergrads

Likely (60-79%)

  • Fordham (NY): About 10k undergrads

  • Muhlenberg (PA ): About 1900 undergrads

Toss-Up (40-59%)

Lower Probability (20-39%)

  • Skidmore (NY): About 2800 undergrads

Low Probability (less than 20%)

I’m not sure if she is interested in ballet or other types of dance, but Dickinson does have this partnership program that might be of interest-

Academic school, good merit. Fairly rural but in a charming town and not too far from bigger cities. Also may be smaller than what you are looking for.

Thank you. Does anyone have any information on University of Michigan for dance? Is one able to audition? Is it the same admissions rate as the rest of the University? Is it any good? Do they give merit aid? Are you able to minor or double major?

My D18 considered applying to Michigan. She didn’t in the end because it was too expensive OOS (as far as we could determine there was no meaningful merit aid). From what I can recall it was audition-based.

We found merit aid was much stronger for my D as someone with excellent academics applying for dance than for her twin brother with equivalent academics and comparable ECs applying for academic subjects. Simply put, there’s less competition, and at many colleges the College of Fine Arts makes these decisions based on their own pool of applicants.

Does it have to be a dance minor, or is she looking for a place where she can continue dance in some way…and what kind?

Check Loyola Maryland.

She just wants to dance at a high level. Doesn’t have to be a minor or even with a school. She dances all styles and likes diversity.
