Here is more details about grades:

Core Classes:
Honor Algebra 1 (B) Honors Geometry (C) Honors Algebra 2 (B)
Honors Biology (B) Honors Chemistry (B+) Physics (A)

Russian 1 (B+) Russian 2 (C+)

Her electives are art classes but the Vtech admissions counselor seemed dismissive of those classes, so I don’t include them. She is enrolled this year in AP Chem, AP Psych, Honors Pre-Calc, English 11, History 11, Russian 3 and an art class, but I don’t know how her grades are shaking out.

Extracurriculars (although I don’t think Vtech cares): Rowing (which ranges from 12 - 30 hours a week depending on season); Art Club, Rec League Soccer

That is a pretty demanding schedule. If she does well on her SAT’s I would think she is Va Tech material.
Any interest in Rowing in college?

She does have an interest in rowing in college. Part of the appeal of Vtech is that it has a strong club rowing program; however, if a college did not have rowing, I don’t think that would be a deal breaker for her.

OK let’s keep this thread’s focus where the OP intended it to be. Unfortunately Virginia Tech’s football team has had a few name players who have been disappointments as student-athletes, but this school is far from being alone in that regard.

Practically every DI team has off the field issues that they are not proud of. VT’s biggest in state rival, UVA, another strong academic school, lost 6 starters off its football team to academic issues and had 5 players arrested in 2008. It is unfortunate that these things occur, but in no way should the stupidity and recklessness of a few diminish what these schools stand for as a whole.

I apologize and didn’t mean to single out Tech - I am a Tech fan and have lots of family who have gone there and some still there. They are by no means alone in recruiting kids who haven’t been successful. It’s just more disappointing to me when it happens to Tech.

It’s OK cartera45, my response was mainly because of my allegiance to VT, too It is disappointing to me when ANY of these kids make choices that cost themselves a chance to get a life changing education or screw their lives up at such a young age. This is far more important than how it somehow tarnishes the school…problem is it happens too much at any of the BCS schools.

I know that Beamer, Groh, Paterno, Bowden, etc. die a little inside whenever it happens- they all recruit mostly the same kids year in a year out. And yes, younghoss, both Michael and Marcus Vick were recruited by and would have been accepted by UVA. Michael almost went to Syracuse. Interesting article about this topic BTW:

Good news is, for every kid that screws up and gets negative attention, there are more great ones that are doing the right thing and taking advantage of everything that being a DI student athlete offers.

Yeah, the Vick episode definitely caused pain in our household. Our older son caught the Hokie fever early on in seventh grade. (Why? I don’t know? Neither my spouse or I attended Vtech or even grew up in Virginia?!) He loved science and math and thought Vtech would be the perfect place for him. So he took biology, AP Biology, chemistry, AP chemistry, geosystems, AP Environmental Science, physics, AP Physics, and mathematics through Calculus. His unweighted GPA was about 3.20 and he scored 4 and 5s on all AP exams. He scored 670s on SAT I. And you guessed it…he was rejected! He is a sophomore in college but he is still sensitive about the Vtech rejection. His advice to my daughter was to not get too emotionally involved with the idea of Vtech. And she took his advice to heart. While we were visiting, I asked her if she wanted a Hokie item from the bookstore. And she said no, not unless she was accepted.

Do check out Ohio University. It’s a gorgeous campus in a cute little college town in southeast Ohio. Lots of school spirit - kids wearing Ohio gear. We loved it, but S felt it was too rural.

You might want to check out UGA. We had visited VT and my older D loved that Hokie spirit, but VT was not a good location for her. She wanted a warmer climate and I could not convince her that the cold March wind whipping across the drill field was worth it. Yes, I am a Hokie grad. Anyway, she ended up in Athens and absolutely loved it. I have heard it is becoming quite difficult to get accepted to UGA, but an OOS, pulling full freight, might get a second look. Wonderful school spirit and I hate to admit it, but their football spirit might even be a little better than Tech’s. Those Dawgs are wild about their football!

Someone mentioned this before, but choice of majors can help a decent student get in. I know that when we looked at VT the fact that S was interested in Geography was helpful to him, per the professor from the department we met with while there.

A good friend of S’s who wanted to major in engineering with similar grades did not get accepted. S did get in. These examples are both OOS so don’t know how that factors in.

I would never encourage a student to enroll in a major he wasn’t interested in. But, if your student does indicate one that isn’t one of the most popular, it can act as a tipping point.

We also thought VT was absolutely beautiful. S wasn’t thrilled about the adjacent town–he felt it was a little too rural for him. The parents, however, LOVED it :)

Dogwood, great suggestion on UGA! I know that getting in OOS isn’t easy with the HOPE program for their in state kids, but it is a wonderful school and quite like VT in many ways. A friend’s daughter was accepted two years back and she was, in her mom’s words, a “solid B” student.

They just opened a new arts building and have a very good reputation with their arts programs. yorkyfan, the UGA admissions rep for Va (Cindy Crawford) makes her rounds at many of the Virginia high schools each fall. This is where she was this year.

My s emailed her several times with questions and she was so courteous with her replies.
Such a nice person. He had a really hard time deciding between VT and UGA. Dogwood, he has already commented on the difference in the Athens climate and what he is experiencing walking across that drillfield for his 8 oclock classes! Ahh…The Dawgs and the warmth of the south! :)
