Because sapphires are more dense than diamonds, a 3 carat sapphire will look much smaller than a 3 carat diamond. I have a 4 carat oval sapphire and it does not look particularly large - probably the size of a 2 carat diamond.

IIRC, emerald cuts are the most expensive cuts (cannot hide a flaw). I would have loved a small, but high quality, emerald cut diamond.

I ended up with a medium size and quality, round cut, family heirloom. It is pretty, but due to family dynamics, I don’t feel that it is mine. For about 15 years, I was asked every single time I saw my in-laws if if I was taking care of the deceased grandmother’s ring! So annoying. The original owner of the ring did not have a happy life and I sense that my MIL would prefer that her daughter (still single at 55) had received it, so I do feel it is jinxed. I don’t wear it unless I am visiting the in-laws or at a fancy event.

I think rings are regional to some extent. My ring feels downright large in the upper midwest, but like a chip in NYC (my hometown). I think any gal that has a size requirement for her ring should be shown the door!

Congrats to OP for prioritizing correctly and best wishes for a satisfying ring hunt and, more importantly, happy marriage.

“I think any gal that has a size requirement for her ring should be shown the door!”

Amen to that!

If you ever want to feel morally superior, I suggest Googling “disappointed in engagement ring.” One carat is too small? Eesh.
