Got a FaceTime Message From Stranger

Ok…you were worried that a stranger HAD your email…and then you just gave a stranger your email? You can set up a new gmail account today!

Sigh. .

She didn’t ask for my e-mail, but she told me she had sent out some e-mails to people interested in renting her condo this morning. I gave her my e-mail address and asked that she remove me from her list of prospective renters. Still don’t know how I got on it. She apologized profusely.

Some further investigation online revealed that her cell phone number is in Tampa. I did find a couple of postings online for a condo available to rent in the Tampa area which gave her phone number as the owner. So it sounds like she is legitimate.

But this still doesn’t explain why I got a video chat from her phone number this morning since she said she only made phone calls and sent e-mails. She claims she didn’t know what FaceTime is.

Did it ever occur to you that she is not telling the truth? Seriously, if it we’re
me, I’d be changing my email address…now.

thumper1 --

Oh just forget it. Sounds like most of you have come to the conclusion that I’m just stupid and naive. I should have known better than to post this thread.

I get plenty of spam already, so no need to change my e-mail address.

bingo!!!

So now the fake woman has your email address AND phone number…

She’s not a fake woman. Did a bit of Internet sleuthing. Her name is Gertrude F. She has a condo listed for rent on VRBO and Homeaway. She’s received 34 positive reviews from previous renters. She’s the registered owner of the condo according to Pinellas County property tax records. So she’s legit. Unfortunately, her phone number somehow ended up on a web site that has fake information about people.

Aqua, what I think some people are trying to tell you is you may have fallen right I to her trap. Curiosity got the best of you and you called her (so she now secures your phone number) and you ave her your email - a second confirmed piece of info about you. It may result in nothing, but if she is "fishy " you just want to be very careful feeding into or simply just releasing I of about yourself - the thing that you originally were so upset about !!

I’ve gotten spam messages from IM’s and texts to my cell phone. Generally my impression is that these people might be operating some kind of sex line and they are hoping that people will pay them money to stay on the line with them.

Maybe Gertrude F is just looking for condo renters, though. :)

Is hers the one in Boca Ciega Resort in the Clearwater/ Largo/ St Pete area? ?

Well in light of the CC security issue that was just posted about, and not to get all paranoid about things, yesterday we received a phone call on our unlisted home phone from a “p” number on caller id.

The person on the phone INSISTED we had a computer virus on our microsoft system? Huh? Curiosity got the better of me and I engaged him and said we do not have a microsoft system(first time I have ever heard it referenced to in this way) He then adamantly said it was macintosh, he clearly was reading off a script of some sort, he was foreign, almost sounded similar in wording to the emails with bad english looking for money to be sent to rescue stranded friend.

He was clearly looking to scam somebody out of something.

So an new way to try to gain access to your computer

And the moral of the story…NEVER give your own email to a stranger over the phone. AND do not post YOUR or anyone else’s personal identifying information on public sites.

Hi, I have just come across your post and I’m in the exact situation! Yesterday I received an iMessage on my iPhone from a stranger saying “Hi”. The email address it was sent from is not familiar to me. “Jutandakaka******.com”. I then asked who he was and how he obtained my details? He replied that he had me listed as “Abba” in his contacts. I already knew some was fishy. I asked him to delete me from his contacts and he replied ok. This afternoon, I got another IMessage from the idiot saying “hi sister”. I asked him to leave me alone and I was going to have him reported for harassment. He immediately called me on FaceTime and as I answered he hung up. The idiot then sent a picture of himself!!! What for I don’t know. Looks very Indian to me.

Not sure what to make of this? How to block him from contacting me? Is my apple account hacked?

Also, I have my settings on FaceTime connected to my email not phone number… Help

A couple months ago I got several calls and texts from a local number I didn’t recognize. First the young lady asked for “Nick.” I told her “Wrong number.” Then she called back and asked “Who is this?” Thinking it was one of my kid’s friends or someone’s mom, I (stupidly) told her my full name. Then she asked, in a sort of accusing tone, “How do you know Nick?” I said I didn’t know any “Nick.” Then she texted me, “Are you sure you don’t know Nick ‘Jones’?” I texted back, “Never heard of him.” Then she texted “Then why did I find your number on his cell phone” I texted back, “Must be wrong number.” Finally, I realized this was a jealous girlfriend (duh). Nick has an unusual last name, so I Googled him. First thing that popped up? MUG SHOT. Address only a few miles away. Then I Googled my name (I have a “Jane Smith” type of name) to find out how many with my name in the area (a bunch)–I was afraid girlfriend might show up at my door.
