In memory of my 35th High School reunion later this month.

37 years ago I left an abusive house and moved 60 miles away. Enrolled in a strange High School, worked 40 hours a week after attending school all day, worked another 40 hours a week at an all night diner, and slept on a beach until I could afford to rent a room.

And those my friends, are just the headlines. It was all worth it and if given the same choices, I would do it all over again.

When I was a commuter I made it a point to never take a class before 1pm, because yes, 10am is early. XD I took a 9am my first semester and it was a disaster of epic proportions.

I have to work two jobs because I help support someone back home. It’s a complicated story, but, I have to be at work at 5:30am on weekdays, I have a full day of classes, and then I work another job, do schoolwork, and try to get a couple hours of ZZZ.

How do you do it? I work 40hrs a week and I’m having a hard time trying to study. Well, its more or less I get stuck and have very little time for help…

During the semester, I just don’t have any time for myself. I mean, the bit that I have, I try to use to work-out so my body doesn’t collapse under all the stress.

But, yeah, if I am stuck on something, I get flustered because I don’t have the luxury of going to study groups as often as I’d like. And what’s frustrating is, even at my school, it can be terribly difficult finding students who use study group time constructively - rather than 50% socializing, 50% work. I need 100% work, so I can get out and get on to the next thing.

Link, do you work and go to school full-time?

Money, maybe? I paid for a lot of community college out of pocket (and scholarships) and then I’ll be dedicating some of my finances after graduation to pay back student loans. Luckily I was smart about decisions so it won’t be that much, in terms of student loans, but still…that’s probably it.

Honestly I’ve always just lived by the rule of as long I get something out of the class and pass then I’m fine. I never had to have an A+ on everything I did. If this was going to be the one time I could see insert artist here then I would definitely go see them, even if it meant being tired in the morning or being behind on a day of studying or whatever.

Oh, and in my ideal world the weekend definitely starts on Thursday and the day starts at 10AM. But I’ve had many a work day (or school day) where I’m up at 5AM. If at all possible I try to make my schedule work out for me This is mainly because I’ve spent most of my life battling with severe insomnia so I would just rather be able to work out my schedule so that it will work better for me. But if I have to do be up, I’ll be up. If I have to work all weekend, I’ll work.

P.S.: Maybe I’ve just learned this from the way my crappy school system is in my state/city, but honestly they could care less what we did in middle or high school. No one really cared how many days you missed or what grades you had. They still had to pass you; it’s usually the teacher/school who got in the most trouble if a kid fails so no one wanted to fail a student. They wanted to do what they could to keep their graduation rates up.

I’m like you. Not a morning person by nature. So do what I do. Work out in the morning, and find a paper route that pays good. On the downside, I’m so worn out right now I can’t bear the thought of snowfall.

But seriously. Before, 9:00 AM seemed super early. Now, 8:00 AM seems super late.

^ With the job I had last semester I spent part of the time having to wake up at 5:30 AM or so to be there early and party of the time going in at 6 PM and working until sunrise. During those early morning times I would be absolutely thrilled to not have to go in until 8:30AM!

But for the most part, the 8AM hour is avoided at all costs by me!

The only one I can think of is off the top of my head, mostly because I can’t really think right now… This happened last night/this morning/over the weekend
Couldn’t pull myself together over the weekend and did nothing.
Got tired at 8 pm sunday and tried to fall asleep.
couldn’t sleep and got back up at 12:00 AM.
studied ochem for ~3/5 of the time period between 12 and 5. the other 2/5 consisted of walking around aimlessly and playing FIFA 11.
was completely wasted by 5 AM, and decided a little sleep is better than none at all.
set the alarm for 7 AM, snooze then 7:30… snooze then 8:00 AM
Got up without a shower/toothpaste. Went to pick paper for paper route.
Skipped 9 AM and 10 AM classes to study for Ochem
11 AM: moment of truth - the ochem test. (guessing on mid 70s to low 80s; 80+ = A)
10: Now I gotta finish a thesis/outline that was due last friday. (thank god my english teacher digs me, at least used to) In addition, I have to study my as off for that p-chem test on friday.

COMMON THANKS GIVING !!!

Forgot to mention I have another big test along with the final research paper for english due before thanksgiving break. F*!

Sorry, yes I do work full time. It’s not because I want to, it’s because I have too. It’s really taking a toll on my grades. I used to be a near 4.0 student, but my family’s current financial situation is really hard. I know this one kid who was at my job who worked for the money. He was just a HSchooler at the time but his dad made six figures a year. Like, a month before he went off to school he got an iPhone, a brand new Mistubishi Lancer and a bunch of other things.

I’m not the jealous type, but dang. Sometimes I wish I just a little piece of the pie in the sky! Oh well, when I become successful I can look back on my sacrifices and maybe sell my incredible story to CNN…

I grew up ina small town where every one knows every one!

I went to school almost 6 hours away becuase Im a deaf education/elementary education major and very few schools have deaf ed.

Ive missed alot of things becuase Im 6 hours away! My GodDaughter is due any day now and Im hoping she will wait til th 17th so I dont miss that too

What have I given up? Nothing.
There is a saying at my university: Don’t let academics get in the way of your education.
I’ve always been able to do well academically without giving up anything socially.
Granted, my grades in college are relatively low right now, but I had an awesome first quarter and would not have done things differently to get better grades. I’ll just learn to study smarter, not harder haha.

I’ve given up large parts of my social life, sadly. I used to be reallllly bad in school, even failed a year. After that I got my act together and started to work hard, which I hadn’t been doing before. I go out a lot less. I don’t see the people who I used to hang out with anymore. My best friend is still there of course and I’ve made new friends so it’s not like I live in a bubble. But I rarely ever go out and spend most of my time on school work. Has definitely paid off, though.
