h1n1...does it start with sore chest like a cold?

Both my kids may have H1N1 right now! The older one at college has a low fever and is feeling achy with a cold. She tried to not go to classes but had a math test and the prof said come (so much for the school’s H1N1 policy). She said she’s not feeling all that bad so she’ll get through but I’m concerned by not taking care of herself she’ll feel way worse tomorrow.

My younger woke up with 103 fever 1AM Sunday morning and has been in bed ever since. I did get her to leave her bed this evening but she wasn’t happy about it. I’m hoping she will go to school tomorrow but it’s not looking likely.

All I know is when I looked up info on line I kept getting different symptoms so I guess it really doesn’t matter what either of them have, they’ll just have to wait it out. Thanksgiving is right around the corner, can’t wait!

radannie, yes, I had congestion, but the asthma was more like wheezing.

going to the doctor today. Still don’t feel well. My dilema is I am having a big family Tday here on Sunday. I am hoping I’ll feel better by then. Still VERY dizzy, slight fever.

I started to feel sick on Sunday (last). So, from people who have been sick, do you think that by SUnday, I’ll feel better?

NY MOM-----you need to get off your feet and do some serious “power sleeping”. It took me only two days to break the fever. But the following week I just felt wiped out. Take care of yourself NOW and you will probably feel much better by Sunday.
Another thing…for me it (the temperature and severe exhaustion) seemed to come in waves.

My daughter had high fever, etc. on a Tuesday and went back to class the following Mon. She remained tired for another couple days and retained a cough for another couple weeks.

Just returned from the Dr. Diagnosed with H1N1. I have had a high fever between 102 and 103 for about 4 or 5 days. Headache, chest congestion. No sore throat. Aleve helps the fever but it is bothering my stomach. Dr said to eat something first. He said in our area all the flu they are seeing is H1N1. But that I was the first flu he has seen in a couple of weeks after seeing a lot of it in early Dec. I am foggy and just exhausted. Hoping that it passes soon. He said I could be tired for 3 weeks. Also was given a lecture on getting a flu shot for now on. (I told him I never get sick)

Rest! hope you feel better soon!

mom60 I hope you are better soon. I don’t get sick either and haven’t ever had a flu shot. My friend, both her daughters and her grandson had H1N1. It seems to be becoming more prevalent in our county.

My D is sick now with H1N1 and it’s so frustrating to be 16 hours away! She has high fever, cough with accompanying chest pain, a bit of nausea, extreme fatigue and joint pain… She went to student health, got tamiflu and something for her cough, an inhaler if she starts wheezing, and told her to alternate between tylenol and ibuprofin for the fever and aches/pains and I’m just hoping she’ll weather the storm without any complications.

I’ve told her what to watch out for and that if anything on the list pops up, to get to the ER. I’m staying in touch every few hours just to be sure nothing creeps up.

Having kids in college who are far from home makes it very difficult when they’re sick.

Oh, martharap, my heart goes out to you! I have just gotten over the regular flu and I know how lousy she must feel.

Does she have a friend that will bring her fluids, chicken soup, saltines? Those were about the only things I could eat. When my son was sick I asked his friend to just leave things outside his dorm room door so he would minimize his exposure. But it made me feel better to know that he wouldn’t have to drag himself out to get what he needed when he felt so lousy.

Hugs, hugs, hugs to you!

Thanks momlove!

Her suitemates are bringing her things she can get down–applesauce, soup, gatorade—and I’m constantly reminding her to stay well hydrated. Unfortunately she has a craving for mashed potatoes, and hasn’t been able to find any!

Mashed potatoes was one of my first “meals” ~ it was also bland enough to go down nice and easy. Gatorade was also the only drink I could tolerate due to a terrible sore throat. It’s too bad so many campuses lack a grocery store nearby to purchase those pre-made mashed potatoes. Glad to hear she has good suitemates  Still, it’s tough not to be able to check on them with your own eyes!

A bad case of the flu feels really, really horrible. The last time I had it I thought I was going to die, and at that time, I would have seen it as a relief.

I hope everyone recovers sans complications.
