Hamilton the musical

After purchasing tickets for Chicago last September, show night finally arrived on Friday for D & myself. It was wonderful, but D & I were each slightly critical of a few of the performers. She thought Eliza smiled too much and I loved our Washington until he got to “One Last Time” and his range wasn’t deep like Chris Jackson. He delivered it well, but hit some pretty high notes and I’m guilty of being pre-programmed by the original cast recording which had me thinking “that’s too high.” Burr & Angelica were wonderful. We ate dinner at Petterino’s, a recommendation from the fragrance clerk who broke our no-purchase policy earlier in the day while we were browsing the stores. The meal was delicious, so I forgive her for “making” me spend money I wasn’t planning to spend. I’ll think of our trip every time I squirt that scent, so maybe it’s okay.

Now you have to tell us the name of the fragrance so we can think of Hamilton as well!

Galop d’Hermes, the newest fragrance from Hermes. More than I would generally spend on perfume, but the saleslady assures me there will be a refill available for my designer bottle at some point. I am not known for liberal use of fragrance, so I should be able to savor it for quite some time. D was also drawn into the perfume vortex and bought a different, less expensive Hermes scent. Her husband had recently told her that she smelled like his mother, so she was more vulnerable than I was to a purchase :))

Some family members went to see it this weekend (tickets were a gift from us). They really enjoyed it. Only negative was sitting next to a couple of “fan boys” who insisted on not only singing along but doing lines right before cast members. If it was me, I would have told them to knock it off. Tickets are way too expensive to have the experience tarnished by amateur hour seated next to you!

T minus 20 minutes until the show! Woo Hoo!

Jealous!

My D, in Chicago, has been entering the digital lottery every day since it started and last Friday she won! She attended the matinee last Saturday. The tickets were for the front row. She said it wasn’t an ideal location, but for the opportunity to see the show at all, and for $10, she wasn’t going to complain.

^^^^ my daughter just told me about a kid at her school (outside of chicago) who went last saturday too through that lottery system!!! LOVED IT.

We managed to snare a couple of house seats at list price ($195pp) for the short San Diego run - right in the middle of the orchestra so it should be a great view. Seats in that area are reselling in the $500 range so I guess I can count it as a bargain! I believe it’s the Los Angeles cast coming down. We had a connection through my brother to someone affiliated with national touring companies.

Last month I listened to the cast album along with reading the lyrics and I’m currently reading the Chernow biography. DH is reading the lyrics in “Hamilton the Revolution” - brother is so excited we’re seeing the show that he sent us a copy for Chanukah.

Have fun, @Marilyn ! Yes, this is the touring cast. A very talented group. I don’t know all of them but do know several and have seen them perform in other things. I think you will enjoy them!

I got two tickets for Hamilton two years ago (bought from ticketstub in December of 2015), was planning to go to see it with DS while he had a performance in NYC, flu got me and DH went with DS instead, both DH and DS r opera lovers so they were not that excited (I was so bummed!) to see it, but they BOTH really enjoyed the show, rap and all, the multi-racial casting and the ironic portraits of some of the founding fathers included. Now the original casts have almost all left the show, I am surprised it is still so hard to get the tickets.

@makemesmart, it isn’t really surprising, and by the way, this is the touring show that Marilyn is seeing, a completely different cast than was/is in NYC. The show itself is wonderful. The regional casts and touring casts are completely different than the OBC, and the cast in NYC now is also completely changed. Most people who see the show, either in NYC or elsewhere likely wouldn’t be able to name the actors in the show or the ones they’ve seen. It isn’t the cast that draws ticket demand in an ensemble show like this, it’s the phenomenon of the show itself.

When tickets first went on sale on Ticketmaster (and other recommend sellers), the 3 week SD run sold out in ~1 day. I got the last sold orchestra seat during this initial sale, which is for Jan 14th and was ~$150. Now I see that there are a lot of resale tickets for sales, with orchestra prices ranging from ~$300 to ~$3,000 on the days I checked. I’m looking forward to it. I’ve have all the songs on my iPod and listen to them often while driving. My favorites are:

Alexander Hamilton
My Shot
Right Hand Man
Satisfied
That Would Be Enough
Yorktown (the world turned upside down)
Non-stop
Cabinet Battle #1 and #2
One Last Time
The World Was Wide Enough
Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story

I understand that some of the non-Broadway shows have additional songs that I am not familiar with, such as Congratulations.

“I understand that some of the non-Broadway shows have additional songs that I am not familiar with, such as Congratulations.”

Interesting. I did not know that. I wonder what the thought process was in adding new material. The show is on the longer side as it is, I thought (not that it seemed long as a viewer just talking about running time).

I have a ticket next September in Boston. I don’t care who’s in it; I’m sure the entire cast will be great. It’s the opportunity to see the staging and the production I’m excited about. Otherwise I would be content with just the cd.

My date is about 6 weeks away. So excited!

I hear that Jason Brown (figure skater) is using “The Room Where It Happens” for his short program this year. :D. On TV tonight if you have NBCSN.

It’s more that the song Congratulations and some other material was included in the initial run, then later cut in the Broadway version. I’ve heard that it is not cut in some of the more recent non-Broadway shows.

This is was I saw about the song Congratulations…“Taking place between “The Reynolds Pamphlet” and “Burn” in the Off-Broadway version of Hamilton, “Congratulations” was cut from the final version. However, several lines appear into the final version of The Reynolds Pamphlet”. The full version was in a Ham4Ham for anyone who wants to hear it. No idea if the full song is in the touring company shows.

D21 and I are going to Houston in April to see Hamilton. We can’t wait!

“The show is on the longer side as it is, I thought”

I agree. I adore it, and the only thing that could make it better is some judicious trimming. I wouldn’t necessarily cut songs; I would shorten songs.

(Not that anyone is giving me any Tonys.)
