Part of the reasoning for defending the no-broadcast of the live show could also be an understanding of the mindset of the post personal recording world we live in. So many people will demand that the live show they attend reproduce every move, every note, every line exactly as was done in the broadcast they saw and loved.
@FallGirl That was a good production of TTB, not my favorite one, but good, nonetheless. It also included the wonderful Karen Olivo, who, like Leslie, is a Rent alum.
But they do do ‘things like that’ with some shows. Rent was recorded over a few live performances and shown in theatres, and also made available for sale by dvd. This was a few years after the film version was made (and hated by many!). It was also done with the musical, Memphis. These were specifically recorded and filmed for this purpose. The real reason that it hasn’t been done with more shows is that the rights have not been granted for broadcast. When a show is specifically recorded and filmed for broadcast, there are special contracts that have to be negotiated with everyone involved, and other unions also become involved at that point, other than AEA.
And, of course, several Lincoln Centre shows have been shown on PBS, in the Live from Lincoln Centre series. Preserving the integrity of the live theatre experience is often the reason given.
Every show is filmed and in the Lincoln Centre archives but these are not films made for broadcast. They are not of the quality that would be necessary for a television or movie theatre showing.
^ I believe Karen Olivo also appeared in " In the Heights" but not either time I saw it.
TTB is a favorite of mine and I’m always happy when someone else is familiar with it
@FallGirl Yes, Karen was also in ITH. She does very little theatre these days, having pretty much retired about three years ago, after Harry’s Law was cancelled. She now lives most of the time in Madison, WI.
TTB is a nice little show. As much as I like it, I actually wish that it had been kept as originally intended by Jonathan Larson as a one man show. One lovely thing about TTB is that virtually every production has had an alum of Rent in it. Jonathan would have loved that.
Thomas Jefferson always hesitant with the president, reticent, there isn’t a plan he doesn’t jettison, Madison you’re mad as a hatter son, take your medicine, damn you’re in worse shape than the national debt is in!
I mean, DAMN.
For the Kennedy Center deal…could you see ballet pieces or does it have to be the theatrical shows? I’d maybe consider it if I could see the ballet, but not if I had to see Shear Madness 50 times…lol
Anyone want to speculate on what the performance will be for the Tonys? Since they did the opening for the Grammys, I’m assuming it will be something else. I’d vote for my favorite song, It’s Quiet Uptown, but I’m guessing it could be The Room Where It Happens because I think that’s the one they did at the White House. Maybe a medley?
Lin tweeted that he was starting to think about what to do at the Tony’s. Hard to feature all of them (esp King George) without a medley.
On my way to NYC to see the matinee! DH pulled many strings and/or may have sold a kidney to get tix.
Have fun surf city! It’s worth the kidney
Enjoy!
I just read that a TV pilot in which Chris Jackson is featured was picked up by a network. I can’t find whether it is filming in NY or LA. It’s about Dr. Phil’s early days (Chris plays a stylist) so I doubt it will film in NYC. So there may only be a few months left to see Chris. On the plus side, if they are being authentic to Dr. Phil’s days in courtroom psychology, they will film in my area!
Renee Elise Goldsberry (who plays Angelica) had a recurring role on “The Good Wife.” Her character was very interesting.
Chris Jackson was offered the role in the pilot (in LA) before he accepted the GW gig in Hamilton. He went out to CA, talked to the producers, and decided was not giving up his shot on Broadway. (This is in the book Hamilton: The Revolution). The folks doing the pilot may have decided to wait for it until Chris decided what’s he’d do at contract renewal time w/Hamilton. In either event, he has a bright future in front of him!
As to the issue of filming, there are several theater organizations that do live screenings: (Britain’s \National Theatre (NT Live) that screens from several stages, including the Donmar); the Globe (Globe On Screen); the Barbican; the Royal Shakespeare Company; and theaters in Stratford, Ontario. All of these companies provide limited screenings of theatrical productions shown in movie theaters - most are not available for purchase nor are they generally screened on TV (PBS has screened some). In addition to numerous Shakespeare productions, I’ve seen Danny Boyle’s “Frankenstein,” (with Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller alternating roles of the Creature and Victor), “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime,” which allowed for fascinating perspectives due to the angles in which it was shot, “Jane Eyre,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Medea.” and many, many others.
If anything, the screenings make me appreciate live theatre more than keep me from wanting to see it.
I would love love love to see a live screening of Hamilton!!!
Did you guys see the clip of Patti Lupone performing at Ham4Ham today? Pretty cool.
@missypie Yes, I posted that back a few pages urging people who want to see the OBC to get there soon because they have already begun to leave! The pilot was filmed in NY but I’m not sure about further filming.
He already filmed the pilot, which was just picked up this week.
@delurk1 Thanks for the heads up…great Ham4Ham today!
THE SHOW IS TREMENDOUS! The ideas, lyrics, wordplay… The staging is phenomenal, the lighting (!) was outstanding.
It is in no way a “rap musical.” It is a genre unto itself. It is not a traditional Broadway show (dialogue, song, dislogue, production number, etc) but it has elements of many other shows in it.
I loved it. LMM is a genius.
I am at the airport, having just returned from spending a few days with another CCer. On our lengthy drive back to the airport, we had time to get through the first act of the Hamilton soundtrack. It was SO much fun watching someone listen to it for the first time and so quickly ‘getting’ how incredibly genius the music and lyrics are. I think LMM won her over!
I am getting sidebar ads on CC now for Hamilton with Lin Manuel-Miranda’s picture.
Also, this is pretty cute (I hope this is okay to post, not sure about the rules around these, no violation intended!):
