Hard wood floors and dust

Honey oak, about 1000 square feet. Get the x-large swiffer & x-large swiffer (dry) disposable cloths. I can quickly dustmop my entire main level in under 5 minutes. The swiffer cloths pick up a huge amount of dust, sand, hair,…

SIL had wood that was rosewood-colored, and I did see how dust showed up on that. Mine doesn’t so much show dust, but the truth is that it needs Swiffering even if I can’t see the dust, especially since we’re not a family that takes off shoes when we come in AND I like to keep doors and windows open, thus lots of dust.

I have white oak throughout the house (sheet vinyl in bathrooms and kitchen). We use the Roomba robotic vacuum to keep the house very clean–run it daily or when we remember. Even when we weren’t using it, we didn’t have problems with VISIBLE dust. Using the Roomba helps reduce our allergies, since we’re all allergic to dust and dust mites in this household.

In my house there is honey colored oak downstairs, maple up and in the kitchen with lots of area rugs. I sweep the kitchen every other day or so, sweep the stairs weekly, swiffer under tables, beds and radiators, and wipe up any spills with rags and water or Bona. Carpet would be far more work and vacuuming. Sweeping, I can still hear the radio and talk on the phone. I shake out my kitchen rugs several times per week. Vacuuming is more of a pain. I have 2 cats and the hair does build up. Shoeless house is the ticket to keeping things reasonably clean without excess work, as well as preserves the floor finish and carpets.

Yes, in HI, most homes are shoeless and you do track in A LOT LESS debris and grit and mess. It is good for health as well, so we are all well used to being barefoot in people’s homes. Very few HI people commit the huge error of wearing footwear indoors.

I sweep about every other week. We have no pets.
