HARDEST sports to play

This is absurd. Tomorrow, 1:00 at flushing meadows, coqui and I are taking on mesaboogie and either ecliptica or tomadog in a quick doubles showdown to end this garbage.

Uhh, mesaboogie… do people even sweat playing golf? like, even a little bit? … yeah, didn’t think so.

Tennis is harder than football/lacrosse/(insert any other rah-rah sport here) b/c the player can’t get away with slacking for a second. Come on, football players - tell me you haven’t cruised one game or let someone else take the hit for ya, or tell me that there’s never been been a game when losing didn’t have a tremendous impact on you b/c either you didn’t care or b/c it wasn’t your fault. In tennis, because that player is flyin solo (or with just one other person), he/she has to be on their guard all the time, and he/she is responsible for every second of the match.

Oh, and golf is not cool… it’s a pruney, former j-crew employee’s sport. Tennis is for hot nike ATHLETES like roddick, hewitt, and kournikova (ignore the fact that her tennis isn’t exactly what she’s known for haha).

We should invent a new sport from all of these posts…

in what sport is it a good idea to ‘slack for a second?’

NONE

how does your thing with losing not having a big impact on oneself one time not apply to every single sport?

golf is ‘pruney?’ what does that make tennis?

when someone of higher mental capacity than yourself wants to go hang out with someone for a few hours while engaging in physical activity while not beating the s out of eachother, what do they do? they play GOLF!

when your boss wants to take you somewhere on sunday, what do you thing you’re going to be doing? playing GOLF!

ok now that im done with that bull, its time to address all of these ridiculous points yall are makin:

*tennis is harder bc its individual
golf is what?

*tennis is harder because you can’t let your guard down
oh yeah, in golf we just free wheel it for 5 hours. theres no thinking involved. tiger wins because the stuff between his ears works better than everyone else’s junk

tennis is harder bc we play on all surfaces in all weather
first of all, thats not true. secondly, what do you think the point of all of those golf courses are? to be exactly the same just in different locations for convenience? no, theyre to be different and surprising and to *oh boy give you bad bounces and surprising kicks

*tennis is harder because they hit the ball fast
i assume that this means (other than the reaction time thing) that if you dont hit it hard as well, then you are at a major disadvantage. in golf, if you dont hit it far, then you have a long next shot. same idea–you’re screwed.

*tennis is harder because its hard to predict the next shot
in golf, you are in contact with the ball for such a short amount of time…everything has an influence on your shot…this argument doesnt even make sense

*tennis is harder because a few inches can mean the difference between a pure shot and a mis-hit
in golf, an inch is the difference between a shank, a good swing, and a whiff. get the picture?

*tennis is harder because of all the spin
you can figure this out all by yourself

this is just golf, i can rebut your points with basically every sport. TENNIS ISNT HARDER THAN _____

if you have any other brain busters, post em

I can honestly say I have never cruised one game or let someone else take the hit for me. Anyone that is dogging it doesn’t deserve to be on the field.

A sport is as hard as you want to make it. It’s all about how hard you are willing to push yourself. This is a pointless debate and it’s been going around circles.

hahahaha…

wraider, you are completely right. but I can’t resist one parting shot:

cornerstones, personally, I like to push myself physically. Therefore tennis was not the sport for me. I don’t expect any of you tennis guys to ever admit that anything is harder then tennis (though COQUI, I don’t believe you ever answered my question: what is harder, hitting a tennis ball on a return, or hitting a tennis ball on a return while being harrassed by a 245-pound angry man?), but I will for the last time attempt to make this argument: A sport where you are not physically contacted by your opponent cannot be considered the hardest sport to play. That is the basic premise of my entire argument.

And just a side note: kk, you’ve obviously never watched sports if you don’t think people can be hurt by baseballs. People have been killed by baseballs. Last time I checked no one was complaining about that stinging sensation from the little fuzzy tennis ball.

Finally, I play college football Coqui, so I will go ahead and argue that tennis is not the hardest sport all day long.

well that makes 4 of us then…that play collegiate level sports. and of course a sport where you aren’t contacted physically can still be the hardest sport. just becuase getting hit in the face or crotch is more painful doens’t mean it’s harder to do.

well since this argument has proved pointless in convincing anyone, hopefully we can all agree to disagree

Oy, did you see Matt Clement get hit by that baseball in the head? Man, I hope he’s okay, that was a nasty shot.

That is why it is scary to play baseball my friend.

Coqui, I know we’ve been over this point, but I think that I’ve been rather clear. It’s not simply the fact that something is more painful (if that was the case competitive groin kicking would be the world’s hardest sport) it is the fact that you must continue to compete AFTER sustaining the hit. For example, a hockey player may get absolutely murdered on a hit in addition to the already taxing physical effort needed to simply skate, pass, shoot, etc, but he still has to perform flawlessly on his next pass, whereas in a sport like tennis, there is no such burden. That is the point I’ve been trying to make.

How is it not harder to perform a similar act in terms of coordination and athletic skill while under extreme physical duress then not?

See: the hitting a tennis ball while being harrased by a linebacker question.

I think something else to consider in determining the “hardest” sport to play (and presuming that means not to just play, but be at the “top of the game”)
is to look at how long it takes to master, who reaches the top and when.

Basketball is becoming dominated by players just out of high school and football is equally a relatively young man’s sport. Golf and tennis are also dominated by youth and gymnasts, swimmers among others are retired by college age.

You will not master the skills of baseball and rarely make impact until mid to late 20’s. To time and hit a 95+mph fastball, followed by a 80mph curve, to field a 100+mph line drive from 90’ away etc. I still believe are the hardest things to do in sports. Most sports analysts, athletes etc. at the professional level will say that hitting a baseball (at the professional level) is the hardest thing there is to do in sports. Geez, a golf ball is sitting still -lol

the fact that you can be older and be at the top of you game in baseball just means that its not as physically demanding as a sport, so old farts can play pro if the want too. haha. and also i guess its easier to get steriods when you’re older.

coqui- why don’t you tell Roger Clemens he’s an old fart as he’s throwing at your head- lol

coqui: you still havn’t answered my question

“And just a side note: kk, you’ve obviously never watched sports if you don’t think people can be hurt by baseballs. People have been killed by baseballs. Last time I checked no one was complaining about that stinging sensation from the little fuzzy tennis ball.”

I’ll admit that I don’t watch baseball too much because it is pretty boring to me but how does that mean that I don’t watch any other sports? And btw… I never said people can’t get hit by baseballs and I never said that it doesn’t hurt. I know that it happens and it hurts and I would never argue against that. I just said that it isn’t like they are purposely trying to throw the ball at your head every time you go up to bat.

I’m siding with mesaboogie. Ok, obviously, golf isn’t the most physically demanding sport, but the fitter you are, the better chance you have to be good.

Not all golfers are athletes, but many are. It annoys me when the only thing ppl associate with Tiger Woods is that he’s mixed racially.

What you don’t know is that he runs 5 miles a day, trains for at least 2 hours a day, benches 300 lbs, has 4% bodyfat, and gets only 4 hours of sleep a day.

Obviously, you don’t need this to be good at golf, but being fit definitely does help.

The most annoying junk to hear is ppl proclaiming that golf is for wussies, etc. I find that most of these people cannot hit a golf ball past 200 yards.

In fact, what is most annoying is ignorance. Golf, enslavement of blacks, anti-Semitism, homophobia, etc…ok, maybe an exaggeration, but it’s the same BS attitude.

make that 100 yards inside a 50 yard wide fairway

Soccer was always hard for me because I have absolutely no coordination when it comes to my feet. I always ended up getting tangled up in myself and falling down. Eep!

Anything in water. Water polo people are nuts. I could never tread that long, or swim that fast while trying to grab a ball, or basically do anything else they do.

With fencing, I’d probably stab myself. Archery might be even worse.

TOMA,
of course it would be harder to hit a ball with a fat man tackling you…UNLESS!..ah ha…what if you had a fat man on DEFENSE on your side…omg why hasn’t anyone that of that…

and tell me toma, would it be harder for a quarter back to have a racquet and have to hit a tennis ball into the recievers hands rather than just throwing it? i think so.

CHERRYBARRY,

so you’ve basically admitted you don’t have to athletic to be great at golf. and tiger is the only exception you could find to the stereotype that golfers are not that healthy of people. i’m pretty sure there is no way you can say that you can’t be athletic and still be good at basketball, soccer, or tennis.

athlete n. : A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts.

athletic adj. :Of or befitting athletics or athletes.

so if you don’t have to be an athletic to be decent at golf, then golf isnt a sport. i mean that’s a given, but i thought i’d back it up with those definitions. golf’s a game. you can be fat and play fine or be fit and play fine. just like you can be fat and be great at poker or run 5 miles a day, train for at least 2 hours a day, bench 300 lbs, have 4% bodyfat, and get only 4 hours of sleep a day and be great at poker. and i’m not trying to undermin tiger’s workout regimen. its great, but its safe to say he’s probably the only golfer who does that, but he’s not the only one who wins, is he?

the greatest difference between real sports like tennis and basketball and games like poker and golf is that you HAVE to be an athlete to be great at sports, and you don’t to be great at games.

I, of course, still maintain that tennis is the most difficult sport to play. Cheers coqui!

Golf is not a sport; it’s, at best, a hobby.

Football is simply an excuse for frustrated “men” to get physical… oh yes…

tiger is the only exception? oh really?

im gonna go the other way on this and say big john is the exception to the rule and thats why he’s famous for being who he is. because he’s the odd ball. not because he’s the fattest of the fat.

i can think of so many sports that are harder than tennis (golf being one of them).
