<p>And like I said, the number of total spots available in GSAS doesn’t matter. Just because the Physics department may have open spots doesn’t help you if you’re trying to get into History. It’s not like you can just apply to the PhD program in Physics, get in, and then simply transfer over later to the PhD program in History just ‘like that’. What will help you is not the total open spots in GSAS, but rather the open spots in your particular department. </p>
<p>And now that you’ve stated what department you want, we can finally get somewhere. However, it should be said that the number of available spots is a variable. It’s not like every year, the Harvard history department has a known and set number of openings. The history department can expand or contract the number of openings as they see fit according to the quality of candidates they get, the amount of money the department has, how many students are graduating this year (which will free up more departmental money), etc. </p>
<p>However, according to Harvard, about 17-22 History doctoral candidates are admitted every year.</p>
