Harvard Parent Thread

I’d assumed every college had a parents thread. It has certainly been a lifesaver knowing that other parents and students are going through similar experiences and getting great advice!

While it does seem like the semester, exams, and papers were a bit crunched, I welcome the break as a time for my freshman to regroup, rest up/plan for the spring, and digest the lessons learned from the fall.

And a big thanks to all the great parents and others contributing to this thread!

Gadad- Yep, we are convivial, chatty, and probably wish we could have a House of our own on campus- think of the great classes we could take (or teach)…and the parties-wild nights until 9:30 or so…

Ditto on the happy holidays to all, and safe travels for all our children!

I, too, would like to wish all of the parents and students on this thread a happy holiday season. This thread has been very informational and helpful to me. By the way, where is guitars - the originator of this thread? I have not “seen” her/him in a while.

I love this thread! Its one way to enjoy the Harvard experiece from afar, albeit vicariously. It has also been really helpful, especially last year when my d was a freshman. Happy Holiday’s to all! Let’s send a “PM” to guitars and congratulate him/her on the 2000 post milestone!

I hope all of the children traveling home today and tomorrow have a safe trip with this wicked snowstorm pounding the east and heading for Boston tonight. My kid flies out Tuesday, so I am expecting the runways and the backlog of delayed flights to be cleared by then. Right now it looks like nothing will be going through DC airports and major delays at Philly.

Hello! I have been so busy with Christmas and family. I love the parents on this thread. I have found that the advice given is always genuine, honest and applicable. I thank each contributor to this thread. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! :)

I’ll be back…

and Thank You Guitars!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to all participants on this thread, and may you all have a Wonderful 2010!

Thank you all for every thing you have provided here!

Thank you Guitars101 for starting this great thread. Reading through everyone’s suggestions has really been helpful. Thank you all for your great advice. Thank you, Gadad for keeping us all grounded. Thank you EAO1227 for all your “international help” and face-to-face friendship. (I never would have expected that!)

You are all a really nice group and I thank all of you for making this a positive place to share with each other.

(By the way, Marite, daughter was thrilled that I ordered the Finale cake. I just wish I could share her 18th birthday with her tomorrow!)

^ Nice to know! We like the tiramisu.

Happy holidays, everyone. It has not yet started snowing here. S2 is back from his grad school (where it has been snowing steadily) and heading off to see former blockmates who still live around here.

Let me know if someone is stuck in town.

I will add my thanks to Guitars and all the others who have continually contributed to this thread with great ideas and thoughts. May you all have a very happy holiday season and the best new year possible.

This is actually one of the most useful threads on CC. And I don’t think many other colleges have similar parents thread. Dartmouth doesn’t and I wish they did since D2 is a freshman (or in Dartmouth-speak a “13”) now.

^ Well get on over there and get it started, coureur!

^^It appears to be a relatively low traffic board. You need a critical mass of parents to keep it going.

^^^

If you build it, they will come.

On another topic, any gift suggestions for a 20-year-old kid who seems to have all the stuff he needs? No idea to get son this year.

coreur, I have kids at Dartmouth and Harvard too-you start the Dartmouth parent thread, and I’ll support you!

As for christmas gifts, money and gift certificates to Harvard Square eateries seem like good choices. We’re trying to reduce “stuff” around my house and in the dorms-we are drowning it stuff. too much.

D is getting a couple more warm weather items - North Face. Though we live north of Harvard, she has not had to spend extensive time outside a house or car unless she were skiing or snowmobiling. The recent weather and walking everywhere has made here want warm things. Other than those items, it is money and gift cards for her.

Anyone research the e-readers? Son is drowning in books. And so are we at home.

Sewhappy, My uncle has a kindle, he loves it. I personally like the feel of books but I know what you mean about drowning in books and stuff. Got son lots of warm weather stuff, gifts certificates etc. No one “needs” anything in my family and yet somehow I bought too much!

Want to wish everyone a happy holiday! Hope that your children arrive home safe and on time! My kids arrive home on the 23rd, son has Life Sci on Monday and can’t fly till Tuesday arrive home Wednesday. Thankful that he and D have a ticket, they fly through DC before coming over to Europe and so many kids who were flying this weekend had flights cancelled and are having trouble getting flights home before Christmas! My heart goes out to those parents and kids!

We retrieved S and his things yesterday afternoon (Sunday) from school, and the Yard was absolutlely beautiful covered in a foot or so of new snow. He said they had a large (coed)snow ball fight (very late saturday night/ early Sunday morning) in the Yard between entryways which apparently was great fun.

Hello,

Not much activity on this thread for a while… that’s good! It probably means that we are all enjoying our time with our kids
My son did not fly home to Ca. for Thanksgiving so we are really enjoying our time with him now. I LOVE that the students don’t have to go back for finals this year. It makes our visit much more relaxing and enjoyable.

Do most of the students find jobs or do internships over the summer? curious.

Enjoy your time with your kids!!!
