Harvard Parent Thread

no, ive met her. shes not brilliant

I would have enjoyed J.K. more than Souter. I guess you get what you get.

We did make a 5:30 dinner reservation, so that’s set.

I just can’t believe that we’re almost there. I have a daughter who won’t even talk about graduation - she just does not want it to end.

Full disclosure: I’m an Amanpour admirer too. I was just being a bit flippant there. Perhaps I’d be a Souter fan as well . . . if I was just certain of which one of those people in the robes he was . . .

Another Commencement question: There’s a Tuesday evening Class Family Dinner during Commencement Week that goes from 6:00-8:00 in the Soldiers Field athletics area. It’s free for graduating seniors, but tickets are $20 each for everyone else. Is this something that most graduates and their families attend, or if you bought the tickets might you go and find that you’re part of a small crowd?

^^We went. It’s a pretty big event. Nearly all the grads and their parents attend. The field will be crowded (unless it’s raining). You likely end up sitting with your kid’s blocking group and their parents.

We also went, along with the other families from S’s blocking group.

We’ve ordered tickets.

Still another Commencement Day question: We received a large mailing with all of the events and requirements for tickets Along with that was a form to order the Commencement Day DVD which also included events from Senior Week. We ordered it for our daughter, only to receive in the mail a week later, another offer for a Commencement DVD from another company.

This drives me crazy. You can buy frames from the Coop or from Harvard Student Agencies. You can buy DVDs here or there. Does it matter where you purchase any of these things?

Disclosure: Grandma is buying a simple Harvard frame for a graduation gift; I’m just in charge of ordering it.

Thanks Coureur, 1moremom and Twinmom - I didn’t want to make a commitment to go and find that we were the only ones.

GaDad: My daughter told me that she wants to go to everything. So, going we are!

Twinmom - We’re also going to everything. The only question we have is which events to get tickets for grandparents. Definitely for the commencement ceremony and the house ceremony, but not sure what other events.

Fwiw, my D was very excited when she found out Souter was speaking. Then again, she’s pretty excited about most things.

Our son (a jr) is going to be a lot less interested in the events than we will be, so I hope his roommates and their parents can build up momentum for his participation!

We went to everything except the House event held the evening of Class Day. I wished we had gone, because D turned out to be about the only one there with no parents in attendance. But her grandfather (my father-in-law) was worn out from the Class Day stuff and we had to take him back to the hotel to rest up for Commencement the next day.

We bought the ā€œofficialā€ Commencement DVD set that came with the tickets. It was fine. I don’t recall getting fliers from any other competing sellers. We bought the diploma frame from one of the ads that came in the mail prior to graduation. I’s very nice.

I would not have missed one white tented event. Most of us only get to enjoy this once in a lifetime. ;)

We are having grandparents only attend the Thursday events - same with my son. Hope we can manage to get enough tickets for the AM ceremony. A bit worried …

Quick questions for parents of graduating Seniors: When did you make hotel reservations? Did you make them a year in advance? If not, did you have a hard time finding hotel rooms? I am asking because I am assuming that this is the first graduating class that falls under the new (earlier) schedule, and takes place at about the same time as other Boston area schools. BTW, early congrats to twinmom, gadad, and nceph (hope that I did not miss anyone - guitars, is your DD/DS graduating?) - I know you must all be very proud.

Thanks MSMdad - I made them a year in advance, but just a couple days ago cancelled reservations I’d made at Hotel 140, in the event that extended family decided to come. It’s next to Back Bay station on the Orange Line if you’re interested.

Thanks MSMDad. I also made them a year in advance. Tried two years out but no one would take them. Shopped around a bit but the prices were all quite high.

We made the reservations perhaps six months in advance. But then by graduation we had long since given up staying in Cambridge hotels. We stayed in the Residence Inn in Woburn and drove into the Alewife T station each day. It was cheaper than Cambridge hotels and not nearly so much in demand.

Thank you, MSMDAD.

We made our reservations last fall, and some places were already full. We’re staying in walking (in comfortable shoes) distance from Cambridge, which should be a short cab ride in bad weather. I’ll report back post-graduation how that works out.

I know if my D could slow time down for the next two months, she would do so. She really doesn’t want these four years to end.
