Anybody know of a good restaurant to go to for graduation? My D is giving us silly suggestions like going out for sandwiches. She and my wife frequently go to the north end for Italian food. Where else is there to go?

DocT,

Everyone has their own taste in food and restaurants but we have enjoyed The Red House on Winthrop St several times. It’s in a lovely old house in a picturesque corner of Cambridge and the food is very, very good.

thanks for the info!

That’s what we did for graduation dinner. Lots of good restaurants over there.

I suggested Hungry Mother ([Hungry Mother :: Fine Food & Liquor :: Kendall Square :: Cambridge, MA](http://www.hungrymothercambridge.com/)) to my parents and we all loved it for graduation. It’s a bit off the beaten path (ā€œall the way in Kendallā€) - absolutely delicious gourmet southern cooking.

If price isn’t an issue, L’espalier ([L’ESPALIER :: 774 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02199 : 617 262 3023](http://www.lespalier.com/)) is the best meal I’ve had in Boston (and even more so, the best service). It’s easily accessible by T to Copley Square.

Lots of other good choices around Cambridge (Henrietta’s Table, Harvest, Rialto, Red House, Sandrine’s, etc.) as well, of course.

OK JFM, I’m intrigued. What does ā€œgourmet southern cookingā€ entail? Down here, ā€œSouthernā€ cuisine is what some would call ā€œcomfort foodā€ - fried chicken, overcooked veggies, cornbread, cobbler, etc. It’s sort of the opposite of ā€œgourmet.ā€ Might the Hungry Mother cuisine be a reference to Southern New England? :)

Hungry Mother looks like Low Country cuisine to me with a pinch of the Bayou.

Mmmmmm . . . I want to go next trip to Cambridge.

The menu explains things better than I could: [Hungry Mother :: Dinner Menu](Hungry Mother :: Dinner Menu)

But upscale comfort food describes it pretty well - cornmeal catfish, grits, and fried chicken.

I found out about it because of the glowing reviews on Yelp. Check them out [Hungry Mother - Kendall Square/MIT - Cambridge, MA](http://www.yelp.com/biz/hungry-mother-cambridge)

EVOO just moved from Somerville to Kendall Square Cambridge. They use all local fresh ingredients and the food is outstanding. Always excellent!

[Evoo Restaurant](http://www.evoorestaurant.com/directions.html)

If you like Mexican an excellent choice is Ole (also in Cambridge-Inman Square)
http://www.olegrill.com/</a>

The Boston/Cambridge area has many good restaurants so it all depends on type food you are looking for and what you want to spend. The two mentioned here are on the low/moderate priced end for the area but excellent food. Certainly not cheap but not crazy expensive.

Hungry Mother sounds great! (Though I must say that down here in Georgia, $18 will buy you three lunches or two dinners at the all-you-can-eat cornmeal-battered catfish place with free refills on the hushpuppies and sweet tea. )

What are your students doing this summer? any exciting internships, trips, job experiences?

My student is being a college graduate! ;)

D will be an American Heart Association research intern in a pediatric cardiology lab at Stanford Medical School. She is excited, and was fortunate to also receive funding through Harvard’s Herschel Smith fellowship program. I marvel at what fabulous opportunities are available to our kids.

Congratulations Twinmom!

justchecking, also congratulations to your dtr. Stanford is a beautiful campus and the weather is great in Cali

Thanks Guitars!

Justchecking: That is just fabulous!

My kid is graduating and doing nothing before medical school which starts on August 17th. At first we thought she should work but most advised that this is not a good idea.

DD is going to be teaching in a program for high-achieving disadvantaged youth in an urban area.

That’s such a good idea- I’m going to a PhD program in September and am leaving the summer wonderfully open. It is sure to be the last entirely free summer I will enjoy for quite a long time.

Also, congrats to her!

My 16 year old daughter was accepted to Harvard SSP this summer. I read a post that said the summer program is a joke. As a single Mom, it’s going to be tough to pay for (we’re still waiting to see if she gets any financial aid. Do you think it’s worth it? I was hoping it would look good when she applies to colleges in 2011.

This isn’t really the place for your post, but I wouldn’t call Harvard’s SSP a ā€œjoke.ā€ With that said, if it’s going to be a financial challenge, I wouldn’t do it. There are plenty of free things to do during the summer that are equally, if not more impressive. I spent my summers making, not spending money.
