Harvard Parent Thread

^^Residence Inns often welcome dogs. And there is one in Cambridge in Kendall Square, which is over by MIT. The distance to Harvard is walkable in about 30 minutes. It’s also a quick ride on the T. Does the T allow service dogs? I have no idea.

^I have seen many service dogs on the T (and even some non-service dogs in handbags :)).

Happy Mother’s Day to all Moms! I know if our Crimson kids could take time off from exam week they would love to share the day with us. Meanwhile, those calls and cards are so precious.

All the best to you concerned, devoted parents who share your thoughts and experiences of this life-time job. Your online companionship enriches this unique time!

Does anyone know the date(s) for Junior Parents weekend next year at Harvard?

The date is usually not confirmed until January. This year it was March 5-6, a week before spring break. If you take a look at next year’s schedule you may be able to infer what weekend it will likely be.

For anyone looking for storage options, I used a company called Fetch Storage. (web address is [Boston Storage Solutions](http://www.fetchstorage.com)). My D is studying abroad for Fall term and did not want to leave boxes stored at her House. I went up the end of last week and got all of her things sorted between what to ship home (Texas) and what to store. Mostly just clothes to ship home since she will be gone until Jan. 2011. Fetch Storage arrived on time to her door, loaded her 8 boxes, rug, etc. and will deliver everything to her door in Jan. For summer storage it is a little pricey as they charge a pick up and a delivery fee but if your student is gone for a term it is very reasonable. $59/mo for enough space for the boxes with no pick up or delivery fee.

We have reservations for Thursday night after graduation, but would like to go somewhere very moderately priced on Wednesday night. Any suggestions other than the restaurants that were previously mentioned?

@twinmom - There are a ton of fantastic + affordable ethnic restaurants in Cambridge.

The Thai restaurants in Harvard Square are all good, although they’re pretty popular + might be packed – Spice, Aiyara, and 9 Tastes.

There are also a handful of Indian restaurants, although their names escape me.

This is even more casual - but I know I would have been perfectly happy with just picking up some b.good (upscale fast food) or chipotle and eating it with my family on the Charles. Berryline would be great for dessert after!

A little close to my comfort zone

sewhappy - you need to stretch your comfort zone. There is all kind of crime, etc. in any city. Our S was at work a couple of blocks from Times Square when the car bomb attempt happened and my wife and I realize that it does nobody any good for us to obsess over what if…

citdad,

I prefer not to “stretch my comfort zone” - thank you very much. Good for you, though, if you’re comfortable!

I think the Chicken Little attitude is never very productive…

I think we all want to think our kids are safe and sound every minute of the day. I am glad that SewHappy posted the link. Yes, this happens everywhere, but it is a good reminder that we need to discuss safety with out not-so-grownup college students.

Chicken Little? Oh, that’s right - forgot for a minute that the war on terror is officially over. Silly little me . . .

Safety is an important topic. But if you want to turn it into a political discussion, please take it here:

Here is a piece that spoiled my very nice brunch today. I think the author is a bit overwrought and that surely things can’t be THAT bad out there.

^ After reading it, it must have been intended as satire. The “facts” are wack

Wanted to drop in and say “hello”. Are your kids busy packing up today? Mine said she has 2 hours to pack all her stuff! Yikes! After a final early this am…wish I could help…

Hello! I’m wondering if any parent of current students would know this…

My family is going to move from the northeast to the midwest in a few weeks, so I’m thinking that it may easier for me to store my things for college next year near the school rather than dragging them half way across the country then back. Is there some place in the Boston/Cambridge area where I can store a few suitcases for three months? Where does your child leave his or her larger belongings over the summer if you live kind of far away (or does she have to take everything home then bring them back)? Thanks.

-Harvard 14er.

^ If you scroll back a bit you will see many posts regarding summer storage options in Cambridge. My child is storing at his house, so I have no suggestions. But I am sure one of the ideas mentioned earlier on this thread will work for you. Good luck and congratulations.
