Harvard Parent Thread

there is only one chance in a life time to take Math 55 right?

In addition to his freshman academic advisor, perhaps your son should go talk to Prof. Noam Elkies in the Math dept. for advise as he is also an accomplished composer.

^thanks. BTW, rumor has it that Harvard is going to buy the Inn at Harvard and turn it into overflow housing. Not sure of the truth of the rumor but I have heard it around campus a bunch of times.

The Inn at Harvard and Harvard Square Hotel are both owned by Collegiate Hospitality LLC which is owned by the “President and Fellows of Harvard”. So Harvard can do what they like with the properties, it seems.

Oh, they better not mess with the Inn at Harvard. I LOVE the Inn at Harvard . . .

Harvard developed the Inn at Harvard a couple of decades ago and has always owned it. A high proportion of its guests are there for one Harvard activity or another. Even though its location right across from the Yard (not to mention Bartley’s Burger Cottage) could make it attractive for student housing, I’d be surprised if the university would want to give up its hotel use. Prior to the development of the Charles (mid-80s) and the Inn, the Square had an acute shortage of good hotel accommodations. The shortage is back, and rates are high, because not much has been built since. Converting the Inn to a different use would make that problem worse.

I’d be shocked - the Inn at Harvard is quite upscale with banquet and meeting facility spaces - it would make no sense for Harvard to convert it. A number of schools in the area are using hotels for temporary housing due to dorm overflow - maybe that is where the rumor is coming from.

I had to call the Freshmen Dean 's office anyway so asked about irons and boards - none are provided.

Are there any other parents of first years participating in the Dorm Crew program? The reports I have been getting from my daughter are great - lots of work but fun, too. She loved the pizza party last night and scavenger hunt and loves her team!

When are your kids going back to school? My DD leaves on Saturday for her last year at H.

My son (junior) leaves early Saturday morning so that he can get to a meeting at Harvard at 3:00. Right now he is agonizing over class choices.

My DD (soph) leaves Sunday morning. I missed freshman parent weekend last year, but hope to visit this year. Is it my imagination, or have hotel rates have a big price increase ($100 more)?

Hotel prices go up on special university weekends. You may want to try the Irving House (either a small hotel or a big B&B) three blocks from campus. Or call the Harvard Club in Boston. They’re usually under $200 for Harvard parents.

If you book a chain hotel, be sure to ask for the “Harvard rate.” It usually provides a nice discount.

Thanks for that suggestion, TwinMom. I had no idea hotels have Havard discounts.

We have been staying at Le Meridien Cambridge. It is not as close as the Harvard Square hotels, but works for us. With 10-12 hours of travel and jet lag when we arrive, we appreciate the room service and other amenities of chain hotels. This hotel has free WiFi. It is a good hike to Harvard, but there is the T, buses, and a taxi is usually under $10.

Don’t know if this would work for anyone, but when I found out my upcoming conference is at the Hynes Center in Back Bay, I booked the conference hotel- Sheraton. My daughter claims it will be easy for her to come over and stay with me- says it’s a single, quick bus ride from Harvard Square. Apparently they’ve taken the bus over to shop a couple of times.

The Hynes Center should be the same T stop and bus stop as the Harvard Club. Just grab the #1 bus on Mass Ave. behind Wigglesworth Hall. It will appear to be heading away from your intended destination, but it makes a loop around the Old Yard, comes back to Mass Ave., and turns left. Your stop for Hynes / Sheraton / Harvard Club will be (I think) the second (?) one after crossing the river, at Mass Ave. and Commonwealth Ave.

Hello my friends at CC, how is everyone?

So, does anyone have any seniors in high school that are applying to Harvard this year? My dtr is a junior and still has another year to think about it. She is very different from my son, so not sure if Harvard is the right place for her. I do love the school and it’s been absolutely wonderful for my son, just not sure about my dtr.

When should I start to make arrangements for Junior parents weekend? does anyone have dates?

^^Jr. Parents Weekend is usually early in March.

I’m only the Grandmother of a Freshman
At any rate - It couldn’t hurt to make your reservations NOW.

I will be using Reward points and staying at the Holiday Inn Express Cambridge for the Freshman ‘Family’ Weekend in Oct. (Can’t beat the charge - FREE! - and includes hot breakfast!)

(I will just use taxis to get to campus if too far to walk)

Looking forward to seeing my ‘freshman’ - sounds like everything is going great so far!

Thanks for the info on Junior Parents weekend.

Another question
I’ve been hearing tons lately about bed bugs. Do you all think this is hype or legit? I just ordered my son another mattress pad cover that allergy and bed bug proof. It was kind of expensive. not sure what to think

I have not heard anything about bed bugs yet; but that allergy, bed bug proof cover sounds like a good thing anyway. Can you tell me where you ordered yours guitars.
