@Bay - You must be far cooler than my parents!

I donât know about that, jfm, but both my H and I were exposed to more than our fair share of âstate school debaucheryâ
during college, and both of our Ds know that (we were pretty open with them about our unrestrained collegiate fun), so that is probably why they are comfortable allowing us to share in their festivities.

Hey, my kids are going to the Game! One is at Yale and one is at a different Northeast school, and theyâre going to meet in New Haven to take the bus up together. I couldnât be more thrilled - am imagining a lifetime of sibling relationship peachiness from this point forward. (Well, I can dream, canât I?)

I hate to say it, but Yale invented football. All the northeastern schools were playing rugby before the Yale captain, Walter Camp, succeeded in 1880 in getting them to try untangling the rugby scrum and giving undisputed possession of the ball to one team at a time. But Harvard is responsible for the distinctive characteristic of modern football. Actually not Harvard so much as Harvard Stadium.

When the Ivies ruled the football world in 1903, Harvard fans and alums built Harvard Stadium - the nationâs first reinforced concrete stadium and an engineering marvel of its time. By 1906, football had become so brutal that Pres. Teddy Roosevelt threatened to outlaw it if the football powers couldnât find a way to make it safer. The conference of schools that convened first proposed widening the field so that the game could spread out laterally. Harvard, with its brand-new concrete stadium designed around a standard-width football field, threatened to walk out in protest. Since that wasnât going to fly, the next option was to try to spread the game out vertically. Thatâs how the forward pass entered the rule books the following year.

One cool aspect of the stadium is Harvardâs eight National Champions banners - the most recent one is for 1919! :)

jsm - First, I actually doubt that I will see my son at any time during the game. My tickets are probably as far away from the student section as possible and almost at the top. I just want to experience the game and the pre-game festivities (where I expect to see him occasionally). He did tell me that he may be drunk, and I was shocked, shocked I tell you, to hear that!

Second, as for debauchery, Harvard has nothing on my alma mater. We considered ivy leaguers to be rank amatuers in drinking prowess. And I have attended football games at Scott Field at UVa, which at the time claimed to be the worldâs largest outdoor bar. What you call debauchery, I would probably call pagentry. Nonetheless, I wouldnât be travelling as far as I am if I didnât think it would be fun!

Hello Harvard Parents:
I am seeking some restaurant ideas for the coming weekend, preferably in or near Harvard Square. I remember seeing some names on here, but could not locate them among all of the wonderful info on this thread. I require someplace where casual dress is acceptable and a group of about 10 or so will not be a problem (preferably a restaurant that accepts reservations). Thanks!

Curious
Try [Restaurants and Restaurant Reservations | OpenTable](http://www.opentable.com) â great resource and you can make your reservation with a click.

Curious77: We enjoyed eating at Hungry Mother in Harvard Square:

Additionally, I would recommend that you select the âSearch this Threadâ feature situated above your post and type in the keyword ârestaurants.â This will yield relevant posts that direct you towards additional recommendations.

We had fun at Fire 'N Ice during Parents Weekend

" What you call debauchery, I would probably call pagentry."

What a great line Hat! :)

Debauchery. That is a word I used when discussing the party scene at the Porcellian Club in âThe Social Networkâ. Has there been any discussion of the movie here on the Parentsâ Thread? Neither S nor his close friends were part of that scene at Harvard (though he has âmutual friendsâ with most of the movie characters).

Thanks for the restaurant suggestions.

Not on the Parents thread, but there was this separate thread about it here on the Harvard board with several parents chiming in:

thx, coureur.

Hat, Iâll be in Boston for a conference, and then staying through Thanksgiving. I thought Iâd go to the game and asked my daughter to get tickets. She didnât seem to have a problem with it at all, although I did say we would not be attending the tailgate party. (Was that a sigh of relief I heard from her when she asked?)

Any suggestions for a nice Thanksgiving dinner for 4-6? I imagine weâll be taking a few other students out to dinner with us. Suggestions in Boston are fine, too.

Since many restaurants have special menus for Thanksgiving it is difficult to give a reliable recommendation. I would page through the menus of what is available on Open Table:

R-m, I am going to the game principally to see the tailgating. I will stay for the entire game in the absence of abysmal weather. I gave up on getting my son to get me a ticket and got one direct from the Harvard Sports Dept. I am also planning on going to the Harvard/Yale Glee Club concert on Friday night as part of the spectacle, even though my son is no longer in the Glee Club.

We really enjoy Border Cafe. Itâs not fancy or anything, but the food is great and itâs a fun place to eat.

I just purchased our tickets and made our reservations for Junior Parents weekend in March. Iâm so excited to go and get a glimpse of my sonâs world at school. We live in California so making trips across the country is very expensive for us. This will be my first since his move-in day as a Freshman.

Does anyone know if there is an itinerary for the weekend?
