Harvard Parent Thread

Hearing Rev Peter Gomes speak was the highlight for me at Freshman Parents’ Weekend a few years ago. He was an extraordinary and most inspiring soul. He will be missed.

I hadn’t heard about that, Nikiwe. I was at that same speech two years ago. He was remarkable, and I encouraged my Ds to see him preach at Memorial Church before he retired. I also wasn’t aware of his stroke in December, and was hoping that he might be in the habit of coming out of retirement to speak to parents on occasions such as this weekend’s. Just a couple days ago, my wife asked if there was any mention of him on the JPW agenda. This is so sad - he was only 68.

I am not active on the parent thread but am coming for Jr Parent weekend so thought I’d check it out and yes, will have daughter in Currier so will be there.

Beach - that’s great! Nikiwe and I are going to wear our “Harvard Parent 2012” buttons upside-down at the Currier events so that we can identify each other (I know . . . it’s cheesy; sort of like a “secret handshake”). Would you like to join us?

I’m also going to get a phone call during the weekend from Loki5, another CC Harvard parent with a daughter in Pfoho who I met at Freshman Parents Weekend a couple years ago.

gadad, Nikiwe and Beach- I will also be at Currier this weekend. I’ll be on the look out for upside down buttons! I have been lurking on this thread for years so it will be nice to finally meet you!

Well, DW and I are going to be lonesome at Eliot it looks like. If you see an “older gentleman” in a black fedora that might be me. Not sure I want to walk around with an upside-down pin - I may look over-the-hill already.

It was great meeting Nikiwe and Committeelady this weekend! Beach, I’m sorry to have missed you - we’ll all get another chance in May 2012.

A black fedora - your trademark, “Hat”?

gadad - Yeah, it was a college nickname I got after I started wearing a gray fedora. I still have the original, but I bought this one when I went to the Harvard/Yale game.

Sorry I didn’t meet any of you (and my wife kept reminding me that my badge was upside down), but we finally met all the roommate and blockmate parents. What a great group of people. Had a wonderful time at the Housemaster’s reception and enjoyed just kicking back and enjoying the “Harvard life”. Unfortunately, we did not get to visit with our son as much as we would have liked - it seemed like he was constantly going to rehearsals. But to assuage my wife, my son allowed us to go to his rehearsal on the day we were leaving. I guess another trip back is in order.

Hello!

we just returned home from junior parents weekend. We had a great time!!! So many parents and students enjoying having family visiting them. Our son showed us around and we got to meet lot’s of his friends. We had dinner on Saturday night at John Harvard’s and I must say that the Honey Dijon Mustard Salmon was the best I have ever had. We also ate at Border Cafe (one of our favorites when visiting), Uno’s and desserts at Finale. We ventured out into Boston for church on Sunday morning. The weather was wonderful as a matter of fact we commented to our son this morning that the weather in Boston was better than the weather in Southern California. It’s been raining.

what were some of the experiences of others during parents weekend?

It sounds like Junior Parents Weekend was a success for all of you. I’m glad to hear that as we will probably be doing it next year. Our only visit this year is five weeks away when we will see our daughter in the Spring performance of the Harvard Ballet Company. Unfortunately, they scheduled it for the same weekend as the Boston Marathon, so the hotel rates are even more outrageous than normal.

Here’s something for your next visit - D1 drove in from NY to meet us at D2’s Junior Parents Weekend. We don’t ordinarily have a car when we go to Cambridge, so we had a chance to see some areas that are a little farther out than we usually walk. D2 took us all to Mt. Auburn Cemetery, a couple miles (if that) west of the campus. There’s a tower at the top of a huge hill there - the hill provides the most spectacular view of Boston and Cambridge that you can imagine!

gadad, that sounds awesome. I wish we would have spent more time driving around, but with my husbands schedule and my high school dtr’s school schedule, we couldn’t spend any more time away. The flight from Cali wasn’t bad at all.

awizlikekhalifa, my suggestion would be to not come back :)

cltdad, I would highly recommend you going to Harvard for parents weekend. We had a lot of fun and our son really enjoyed showing us around. FYI - John Harvards is a must for dinner or lunch :)

cltdad - You might consider coming up to see the ArtsFirst Weekend performances (April 29 to May 1). I do see that the Harvard Ballet Company will be participating. It is a wonderful weekend if you enjoy music, singing, dancing, or art. All of the student groups related to “the arts” provide a performance and there must be a least 100 different shows/acts. A few of the groups, such as the Holden Choirs, perform a major piece. You cannot see it all.

@Gadad: it was wonderful meeting you and your lovely family! (It is hard to believe the next time will be commencement, and then it is a possibility I will have to miss that!! It looks like a distinct possibility that our highschooler’s graduation will be on the same date, which means DH and I will have to flip a coin to determine which graduation each of us attends!)

@Citdad: We really enjoyed Junior Parents Weekend and I strongly urge you not to miss it.

We enjoyed much of what was on offer this weekend, including a few excellent faculty presentations, acapella performances, an informative session by the Office of Career Services, a visit to their office as well as Health Services, House reception, House luncheon, and a volleyball game between Harvard and Princeton (our son’s roommate is captain of the team). We had a fabulous time visiting with our son, his block mates and getting to better know their parents (at the house luncheon, and again at dinner at a Thai restaurant called “Spice”) . Most of all, this weekend experience reminded us just how blessed our son is to be a student on this campus, surrounded by such wonderful and equally motivated kids, and so many resources and opportunities.

Something new for me. I may have a second child at Harvard next year. Son was admitted for a MS in computer science over the weekend. :)

Congratulations to you and your son smoda61!

Thanks cltdad.

I just heard that my D will be in Currier next year. Can you tell me about it? I don’t remember seeing that particular house on our visits.

Currier is a Quad house, a “moderne” brick structure. If you are standing on the grassy Quad, facing Pfoho (east I think). then Currier is on the upper left side. Although it does not have colonial architectural charm, it is know for good parties in the large suites, as well as having dance and activities space. The shuttle stop is right outside.
